TABLE TOP EXERCISE
Scenario You are the first team of rehabilitation professionals to work in a small newly re-opened district hospital in a newly liberated area close to the frontline. It has 80 beds and 2 operating theatres for emergency and orthopaedic surgery. The hospital is already very full, and there is a shortage of all staff. You are sent to the main acute ward. Your capacity is limited, and you only have 7 hours to see patients today. You do a very quick scan of the ward. 15 October 2024
Activity 1 Identify any patients that need urgent action (medical or other) and what action you would take.
Possible answers Urgent medical review: 1: Urgent review possible compartment syndrome 2: Urgent review possible neurogenic shock. Needs transfer. 11: Urgent review, possible undiagnosed Cx spine injury Other urgent actions: 4: identify a caregiver 5: Provide crutches and urgently clarify weight bearing status
Activity 2: Your urgent patients have all been reviewed. Patient 1 has gone for fasciotomy – remove Patient 2 has been sat down and given medication to support BP and HR – keep for now, transfer likely to be 5 days. Patient 11 has been referred to another hospital for Cx CT – remove. Patient 4: A caregiver has been identified Patient 5: Surgeon says he can partial weight bear. Your rehab team now have 6 hours remaining for treatment today. the patients in order of priority for assessment and treatment by the rehabilitation team
