Introduction

SYNONYMS Overlay denture Telescopic denture Overlay Prosthesis Biologic denture Superimposed denture DEFINITIONS AND SYNONYMS Any removable dental prosthesis that covers and rests onone or more remaining natural teeth, the roots of natural teeth, and/or dental implants; a dental prosthesis that covers and is partially supported by natural teeth, natural tooth roots, and/or dental implants. GPT-10

Maintain sensory input from PDL Improving masticatory function Preserving alveolar bone RATIONALE

SENSORY INPUT FROM PDL

ADVANTAGES Preservation of proprioception Preservation of alveolar bone Horizontal & torquing forces are minimized. Support and Retention Patient acceptance Convertibility Fewer post insertion problems as compared to conventional dentures Its application is virtually unlimited & depends on dentists skill & judgement.

DISADVANTAGES •Available interarch space is sometimes inadequate & may require extensive abutment & design modification to expedite treatment. • Bony undercuts- especially those found buccally to the abutment teeth may pose problem in regard to close approximation of denture base in this area. • Overcontouring- at times it is necessary to excessively block existing tissue undercuts. This will lead to overcontouring. • Undercontouring- because of limited path of insertion & presence of bony undercut sometimes it's necessary to underextend the denture border.

CLASSIFICATION

CLASSIFICATION 1 Transitional ● Patient with few teeth and is already using RDP ● Existing denture can be changed to Transitional overdenture ● The abutments has to be treated and modified 2 Training ● Are not overdentures ● Used in cases where the hopeless posteriors are extracted ● Serves as a replacement and helps in accomodation 3 Immediate ● Constructed before the extraction of the last hopeless tooth ● The Training denture is usually converted to an immediate overdenture 4 Definitive ● A definitive overdenture done after atleast 6 months of extraction ● Metal base and may have attachment
