Obesity is a growing problem that became a global concern. It took the shape of an epidemic in most developed countries. It is associated with major health concerns like heart disease, diabetes etc. We here depicted the top OECD countries suffering from obesity.

Slide Content

In USA, 100,000 to 400,000 deaths are annually
reported due to obesity.

Nearly 72 million adults in the united states can
be defined as obese.

500 million people worldwide, or 1 out of every
10, is obese.

NOT ONLY THAT

HERE ARE FEW MORE

Asian people are at risk even with a BMI
of 27.5 or higher.

In Asian women, a waist size of 32 in. (80 cm) or more and in Asian men,
a waist size of 36 in. (90 cm) or more raises the chance for disease.

Obesity is linked to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, sleep
apnea, and stroke.

OBESITY DEFINITION
Obesity is defined as an unhealthy accumulation of excess
body fat. Having a body mass index in excess of 30 kg/m2 is
called obese. There are several indexes used to assess
obesity. The most common measure of obesity is the body
mass index (BMI).

BMI is defined as a person's weight in kilograms divided by the
square of their height in meters (kg/m2).

THE 1
ST
OBESE COUNTRIES

USA
The United States has the highest rate of obesity with
33.8% of total people. While the USA is rich in science
and technology it has unfortunately gained all the bad
food habits and lifestyles. About 100,000–400,000
deaths are reported to be due to morbid obesity
annually.

Consumption of potato chips, red meat, sweet drinks
along with excess junk and canned food dependency
are listed out as the factor responsible for this.

THE 2
ND
OBESE COUNTRIES

Mexico
Mexico is the second with obesity affecting 30 percent of
its adult population.

One of the major reasons for obesity growth in Mexico is
the consumption of soft drinks. According to the WHO,
Mexico is largest consumer of soft drinks. An average
Mexican drinks 163 liters (46 gallons) soda per year, 40
percent more than the average American (118 liters, or 31
gallons)

New Zealand
The south Pacific nation New Zealand stands fourth in the
list of obese countries with 27 percent of its adult
population affected by obesity. New Zealand's Ministry of
Health unveiled recently that more than one million
people in the country are obese. The rate of obesity is not
only growing among children but also among adults.

THE 4
TH
OBESE COUNTRIES

Chile
In Chile, the obesity rate among adults is 25.1%, higher
than the OECD average of 17.8%. The prevalence of
growing obesity increases in the occurrence of health
problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and
asthma, and higher health care costs in the future.

THE 5
TH
OBESE COUNTRIES

Australia
Australia is fifth with obesity rate 24.6% of its population.
Medical Journal of Australia found that obesity in Australia
more than doubled in the two decades preceding 2003,
and the unprecedented rise in obesity has been
compared to the same health crisis in USA.

THE 6
TH
OBESE COUNTRIES

Canada
Canada is sixth with obesity affecting 24.2 % of the adult
population, which is more than eight million. According to
a new study by University of British Columbia, obesity
rates are climbing in the country, especially in the
Maritimes and territories.

THE 7
TH
OBESE COUNTRIES

United Kingdom
UK is ranked fifth with obesity affecting almost 25 percent
of the adult population. The Independent recently
reported that by 2030 there will be 26 million obese
people in the country - a rise of 73 percent.

As per the figures released by UK's National Obesity
Forum in June, more than a million have a body mass
index of between 40 and 50 - double of 18.5 to 24.9 BMI
considered to be healthy.

THE 8
TH
OBESE COUNTRIES

Ireland
Ireland is seventh in the list of most obese countries with
23 percent of the adult population affected.

In Ireland, the obesity rate among adults is 23.0%,
higher than the OECD average of 17.8%. The
prevalence of growing obesity increases the occurrence
of health problems (such as diabetes, cardiovascular
diseases and asthma), and higher health care costs in the
future.

THE 9
TH
OBESE COUNTRIES

Luxembourg
Luxembourg stand at 22.1 %, higher than the OECD
average of 17.8%. In many OECD countries, large
proportions of the population are overweight or obese. In
Luxembourg, the obesity rate among adults has
increased from 15% in 1997 to 22.5%, higher than the
OECD average of 17.8%.

THE 10
TH
OBESE
COUNTRIES

Finland
In Finland, the obesity rate among adults is 20.2%,
higher than the OECD average of 17.8%. Obesity’s
growing prevalence foreshadows increases in the
occurrence of health problems (such as diabetes,
cardiovascular diseases and asthma), and higher health
care costs in the future.

THE PROMISING NEWS
Obesity rates have significantly slowed or stopped altogether in
England, Hungary, Italy, Korea and Switzerland, and have
grown only slightly France and Spain.

Countries with the lowest overall obesity rates include Japan (3
percent), Korea (4 percent), Switzerland (8 percent), Italy,
Norway and Sweden (10 percent each. In all of the countries
examined by the OECD, the average obesity rate was 16
percent.
