What Are Prefixes?
•Prefixes are first syllable word
parts such as “non-” and “re-.”
•They have their own meaning.
•Prefixes combine with words to
create new meanings.
1.Pre + View = Preview (first look)
2.Super + Star = Superstar (top player)

•Prefixes add meaning
to many thousands of
words.
•Learn a few prefixes,
and you open up the
meaning of thousands
of words.
•The four most
frequent prefixes
account for 97% of
prefixed words!
Is there a difference between
fluent and affluent?

How do you attach prefixes?
•When you add a prefix to a root word
the spelling of both usually stays the
same.
•An exception is when the prefix 'all' is
added to a root word the final 'l' of
'all' is dropped: all + ways = always.
•Sometimes you can add two prefixes to
a word at once: re + dis + cover =
rediscover.
