Metal hydride reaction- .Aldehydes and ketones are converted to primary and secondary alcohols by metallic hydrides such as lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH 4 ) and sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ). Such a reaction is called metal hydride reduction reaction.
Reactions And Reagents 1. Reduction of Aldehydes and Ketones Reagents: LiAlH ₄ (Lithium aluminium hydride) – very strong reducing agent NaBH ₄ (Sodium borohydride ) – milder than LiAlH ₄ * General Reaction: Aldehyde or Ketone + Metal Hydride → Alcohol Example:- RCHO + NaBH ₄ → RCH₂OH RCOR ' + LiAlH ₄ → RCH(OH)R
