Total Physical Response (TPR)
method is a language teaching method
developed by James Asher, a psychology
professor at the University of San Jose,
California. This method is a language
teaching method that is widely applied
by foreign language teachers in the
classroom. This method is one of the
language teaching methods that is very
popular and relevant to be applied in
teaching Arabic to young students.
This method is not only suitable for
small children, but can also be
effectively applied in language teaching
for teenagers and adults at different
levels.

Theoretical Study The forms of instructions given include 'turn
around', 'sit down', 'walk', 'stop', 'jump', etc. Students in Total
Physical Response have the main role as listeners and doers.
Students listen attentively and respond physically to commands
given by the teacher both individually and in groups. Thus, the
Total Physical Response learning model is a model that can be
used in language teaching. This model focuses learning on the
coordination of speech and action in order to teach language
through physical activity.

Principles of the Total
Physical Response Method
In the learning process using the Total Physical Response model, there are principles that must be applied during learning (Larsen-
Freeman & Anderson, 2013).
1.Meaning in the target language can be conveyed through actions. Memory is activated through the Learner's response, the target
language should not be presented piecemeal or word for word;
2.Students' understanding of the target language must be developed before speaking;
3.Students can learn language by using their body movements;
4.Commands are linguistic devices that teachers can use to direct student behavior;
5.Students can learn language through observing actions and by carrying out their own actions;
6.Feelings of success, self-confidence and low anxiety support language learning activities;
7.Students may not be given material to memorize fixed routines;
8.Corrections must be made in a non-intrusive manner;
9.Learners do not have to develop flexibility in understanding new combinations of target language; they need to understand the
exact sentences used in the exercises;
10.Language learning will be more effective with fun learning activities;
11.Speaking skills should be emphasized before written language;
12.Students will start talking when they are ready;
13.Learners are expected to make mistakes when they first start speaking.
In using the TPR method, teaching needs to pay attention to several aspects.
The general goal of the TPR method is to teach spoken language skills at the level
beginners.
The syllabus used reflects a sentence-based syllabus by prioritizing grammatical and
lexical aspects in selecting teaching materials/items.
Sequential practice is the main class activity in the TPR method.
Learners in TPR have the main role as listeners and performers. They listen attentively
and respond physically to commands given by the teacher, both individually and
collectively.
Teachers actively participate and are directly involved in TPR. The teacher is the one
who decides what to teach, who gives examples and presents new material, and who
chooses the supporting materials that will be used in class.
Textbooks are not used in TPR. In this case, teachers must actively choose to
participate in providing the necessary materials, for example books, pens, teaching
aids, pictures.

Apart from that, there are several other advantages of this method,
including:
Language learning feels fun for teachers and students
Students feel free from feelings of pressure or stress when studying
Students have long-term memory for what they have learned, this
is due to empowering the potential of the right and left brain.
This method allows for meaningfulness in learning the target
language.

Apart from that, there are several other weaknesses that need to be
anticipated from this method, including:
The rules in language are so complex that not all forms of language
can be taught using commands.
Some students feel reluctant when asked to demonstrate a
movement, adult students especially will feel uncomfortable or
difficult in classes that use this method.
The foreign language teaching techniques in this method are more
suitable and limited to beginner level teaching.
