Michael McCarthy is Emeritus Protessor of Applied
Linguistics atthe University of Nottingham, where

‘of Applied Linguistics at the Pennsylvania State

Welcome to Touchstone.

‘We created the Touchstone series with the help of
the Cambridge Intemational Corpus of North American
English The corpus is a large database of language trom
everyday conversations, radio and television broadcasts,
and newspapers and books.

Using computer software, we analyze the corpus to

{ind out how people actualy use English. We use the
corpus asa “Touchstone” to make sure that each lesson
teaches you authentic and useful language. The corpus
hops us choose and xplan the grammar, vocabulary,
and conversation strategies you need to communicate
successful in English,
