Tourism - Definition Tourism is the short term temporary movement to destinations outside the places where they generally work and live. “Tourism is the some of the relations and services connected with a temporary and voluntary change of residence for non-commercial or non-professional reasons.” “travel and stay in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited”
Importance of Tourism Tourism is the major source of income for many countries in the world Tourism is emerging as a leading sector in the world. 1 out of every 15 people is involved with tourism activity. Tourism industry has shown its significant expansion in last 40 to 50 years tourism has contributed to the growth in income, foreign exchange and generation of job. International tourist generated US$ 856 billion or 30% of the world’s export of services. Tourism helps to publicise a country’s art culture, tradition in the world Contributes to the balance of payments. Effects of general economic development. Creates Employment opportunities. Helps towards cultural exchange and social benefits. Vital for peace.
Types of Tourism - WTO Local Tourism: The tourism activity which consists of travelling within the own country. e.g. Mumbai to Jaipur or Delhi to Shimla . Inward Tourism: travel of foreign tourist into any particular nation. E.g. Tourists visiting India from Sri Lanka or Japan Outward Tourism: T ravelling by people of a particular country to any other country. e.g. Indian tourists when visiting Singapore or USA or Thailand is an example of outward tourism.
Potentials for tourism development in India Tourism industry holds strategic importance in the Indian economy India has been blessed with natural scenic beauties , right from the coast lines and beaches to the majestic mountains and hill stations, historical monument etc. The vast country is having different language; food culture dress culture etc. Tourism industry has huge potentials in India due to gradual improvement of accessibility, accommodation, attraction and amenities. investments in infrastructural facilities such as transportation, accommodation and other tourism related services lead to an overall development of infrastructure in the economy.

Challenges before India’s tourism sector
Access and connectivity Infrastructure facilities are not adequate. This remains a major hurdle for development of tourism. connectivity remains a major problem. Aviation infrastructure is also critical Airport facilities at important secondary cities and tourist destinations also need to be improved to handle greater passenger traffic.
Lack of proper infrastructure Infrastructure such as ports of entry to modes of transport, access hotels, roads, electricity, water supply, sewerage and telecommunication etc. Many hilly regions improper development of hotels are responsible for environmental degradation.
Amenities India scores poorly in terms of availability of these infrastructure facilities. Inadequate infrastructure facilities affect inbound tourism Increase outflow of domestic tourists from India to other neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand etc.
Human resource Availability of skilled manpower is a major challenge trained manpower or workforce is required at every level — managerial, supervisory, skilled or semi-skilled. Lack of tourism training infrastructure, qualified trainers
Service level The degree of service like airport, railway station, hotel travel agency, tour guide etc. has a significant impact on tourist’s experience lack of proper training and orientation impacts the overall satisfaction level of the tourists
Lack of budgetary support for tourism marketing Recent trends of tourism which include cruise tourism, adventure tourism, medical tourism etc. these require support to develop and flourish. marketing push for these different products is required. India needs to change its traditional marketing approach to a more competitive and modern approach.
Taxation Travel and tourism in India is a high-taxed industry, makes India expensive as a tourist destination. Taxes are levied across the entire industry right from tour operators, transporters, and airline industry to hotels Service tax, luxury tax, tax on transportation, tax on aviation and various taxes on transportation.
