Class VI Physical Science Topic- Traditional and standard method of measurement By- Asish Khatua Integrated B.Sc. B.Ed. (Medical) Lovely Professional University
Let’s Recall- Mode of transport Development over time Need of measuring distance
Observe carefully…
Watch this video carefully https://youtu.be/thdS9ZiMX1c
Traditional methods of measuring distance 1.Hand Span It is the distance from little finger to thumb when hand is spread out 2.Cubet It is the distance from elbow to tip of middle finger Used in ancient Egypt 3.Foot Span 4.Pace Distance between big toe and ankle Distance covered during single step while walking
How you measure any length or distance ?
POLL Match the column A B Hand span Cubit Foot Span Pace
2. Which of the following is not for traditional method of measurement? a) Foot Span b) Hand Span c) Cubit and Pace d) None of these
The length of this room is 20 foot . Ramesh Swati The length of this room is 30 foot .
When the teacher asked about length of room they gave different answer. It created confusion. So, Who is correct Ramesh or Swati?
Situation- Mother asked Anjali to bring a rope from shop for hanging clothes outside. She measured the length as 6 cubit. She went to shop and bought a rope. After reaching home she saw that shopkeeper had given smaller rope though she asked for 6 cubit rope. So, who did a mistake Anjali or Shopkeeper?
Standard unit of measurement- In 1760 the French created standard unit of measurement called metric system. For the sake of uniformity scientist all over the world accepted this. Now, this standard unit of measurement is known by name International System of units (SI units).
Observe your Scale carefully.. 1cm=10mm
1m=100cm 1km=1000m
Arrange the units of measurement from bigger to smaller. Also explain 1mm,1Km,1cm, 1m
POLL Fill in the blanks 1km= m (100/1000)
2) Which of the following is most convenient method for measuring length? CGS unit SI unit Both None of these
Situation- Suman, Swati and Sandhya are measuring the same object with scale. All three got different results.
Correct measurement of length- We should place the scale straight Proper eye position should be maintained. If some part of scale like from 0 it is broken then try to measure from 1 cm mark and subtract accordingly.
True/False A is correct way of measuring. B is wrong of way of measuring.
Recap- Today we have studied about traditional method of distance, SI unit of measuring of distance and correct way of measurement. List different traditional method of measuring distance. Why SI unit is more convenient than traditional method? Describe the correct way of measuring lengths.
Home work- Describe methods of measuring lengths. Fill in the blanks. a) 1m=……………cm b) 1km=…………m Activity- 1) Try to measure different objects in your home with foot span, hand span, cubit, pace and with the help of meter scale. Present it in form of tabulation.
