Traffic jam in Dhaka City
Context What is Traffic Jam Traffic jam in Dhaka city & Bangladesh Causes Solution What can we do?
What is traffic jam ? A situation in which a long line of vehicles on a road have stopped moving or are moving very slowly
Dhaka City and Congestion Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. Population :More than 2.3 core people Dhaka is also one of the world's most densely populated cites. 9th largest city in the world. More than 400,000 cycle-rickshaws running on its streets every day, the city is described as the Rickshaw Capital of the World.
1) Rickshaw 2) Motor cycle 3) Taxi 4) Private Car and 5) Public Bus Transport media in Dhaka city
Current traffic percentage in Dhaka
Time loss due to congestion In this mega city, people on an average spend 2.20 hours in the traffic of which 1.15 hours are due to traffic jam. It means they are loosing 1.15 hours everyday due to traffic jam .
Insufficient amount of roads. Poor Traffic Administration. Wrong Parking. Unfit Vehicles & Illegal License. Construction Works. Hawkers. No Alternative of Buses. Political Meeting and Rally Indifference of Government Unconsciousness of People Overtaking Tendency Uneducated Drivers Extra Private Cars Accident ETC
Encroachment of roads and sidewalks Street vendors, Hawkers and street front shop owners occupy above 60% of the footpaths of Dhaka City. The sidewalks are also filled up by construction materials, garbage.
Rail crossing Everyday we are experiencing movement of more than 75 trains to and from Dhaka. On an average, it takes five minutes to get the clearance for each crossing. Thus in one crossing, everyday the vehicles stop for six hours that is really difficult to offset.
Insufficient parking arrangement and road blockage Limited parking arrangement is another major cause of excessive traffic in Dhaka City. It has become a regular practice to park the car on road. Even during rush hours, people are seen loading and unloading their vehicles on a busy road. City transports also stop here and there without any valid reason. The three major bus stations, Sayedabad , Gabtoli and Mohakhali do not have sufficient capacity to accommodate all the buses operating from here.
What Govt. Can Do… Our government should take many hard steeps to remove the problem. 1) Government should build up highway road, over bridge, build up alternative road etc. 2) Good car parking system. 3) Hawkers who build up their business spot beside important places should be removed. 4) Old or expired vehicles should be removed from Dhaka city. ETC
Infrastructure development. Express highways to be built. Private participation in road development. Low budget development of junctions. Reduction of Junctions. Widening of busy roads. More public transport systems. Implement Metro Rails in Metros and big cities How to reduce Traffic Jam
