association
Background of the study

employedmostlyasadministratorsinthehospitals.

pioneeringspiritsawtheneedtodevelopnursingas
aprofessionandalsoprovidedaforumwhere
professionalnursescouldmeetandplantoachieve
theirgoals.

Table 1 reveals that 58.8% of nursing personnel belonged to the age
group 21 –30 years.

44.6 % were from government sector.

Table 9 depicts that inadequate representation `of TNAI in the government
(81.3%) is the major challenge faced by TNAI. Also it lacks motivated &
dedicated leaders(75.4%), there is inadequate political support(79.2%) & lack
of collective bargaining(76.3%).

Findings
Majority(58.8%)ofnursingpersonnelbelongtotheagegroup21–30years.
Majorityofnursingpersonnel94.2%werefemales.
Most(33.8%)ofthenursingpersonnelarehavingpostgraduateleveleducation.
Majority(55%)
ofthenursingpersonnelwerenurseeducatorsand37.1%werestaffnurses.
Fortyfourpercentageofthenursingpersonnelwerefromgovernmentsector
and42.1%werefromprivatesector.Most(49.2%)ofthestudyparticipants
werehavingprofessionalexperienceof5yearsorless.
Majorityofnursingpersonnel(59.6%)havemembershipinTNAI.Fiftypercent
oftheinstitutionsarehavingTNAIunit.Only20%subscribetheNursing
JournalofIndia.

Majority(73.3%)feelTNAImembershipisessentialasitistheonly
nationalprofessionalorganization,tohavecollectivebargainingand
unityamongnurses.
Inadequaterepresentationinthegovernment(81.3%)isthemajor
challengefacedbyTNAI,followedbyinadequatepoliticalsupport
fortheorganization(79.2%).
Majority(89.3%)ofthenursingpersonnelopinedthatcreating
morepublicawarenessaboutnursingprofessionandthe
organizationisthemajorprospect/expectationfromTNAI.Majority
isnotsatisfiedwiththepresentlevelfunctioningofTNAI.

Discussion
Majority(59%)ofnursingpersonnelsuggestedthatTNAI
muststrengthenitsorganizationalpatternfrombaseto
top,shouldstandfortherightsofitsmembers,inpursuing
morejobopportunitiesandbetterpaymentdeals,Createa
senseofconfidencetoitsmembers,Activelyinvolvein
solvingtheproblemsofnurses,Standasabackbonefor
nurses.Improvethestandardsofnursingpractice/nursing
education/nursingresearch.Afeelingshouldbegenerated
byTNAIthroughitsactivitiesthatitistheretosafeguard
thefutureofitsmembers.

Limitations
Thestudywaslimitedtotwelveselected
hospitalsandnursingcolleges.
Randomizationwasnotdoneduetolimited
samplesandtimeconstraints.
Studywasconfinedtoparticulargeographic
locations,whichobviouslyimposeslimitsto
generalization.

Implications
Nursing practice
Byidentifyingthesignificance,nursescan
activelytakepartinTNAIactivitiesin
ordertocreateafeelingofbelongingness
andtosafeguardourprofession,raiseits
standardsandstatusandprocurethebest
possibleconditionnotonlyforourselves,
butalsoforourpatients.

Similarstudiescanbereplicatedonalargescale.
Anindepthstudycanbeconductedtofindout
howthenursesareappointed,salaryfixationin
Govtandprivatesector,otherwelfare
facilities,howmanyarejoblessandwhytheyare
leavingtheprofession.
Acomparativestudycanbeconductedtoidentify
thesignificance,challengesandprospectsof
TNAIamongnursingpersonnelingovernment
andprivatesector.
