TRAN8021 Note-taking II Jing Fang

Last week A sample note-taking from Andrew Gillies 6/7/2024 2

Script: I don’t believe that common rules across the EU are the solution to everything. Different countries have different systems and structures. So a solution which works in one place will not necessarily work in another. It doesn’t make sense to regulate everything from Brussels , but it does make sense to share our experience and learn from each other. Look, for example, at Germany and Britain. In Britain, we envy Germany’s training system, for example. Or the high productivity of its workers. So we can learn from Germany’s success here. And in Britain, we have had successes too. For example, getting the long term unemployed back into work has been a major success. (112 words)

Two types of layout

Today: Diagonal layout of SVO

Compare: Eur Ty /NE Grk /S Bulg suffered catas : storms, floods, earthquakes   VS “European Turkey, north-east Greece and southern Bulgaria have all suffered a series of natural catastrophes, violent winter storms, flooding and earthquake.” Parallel information presented vertically

What have we found so far: Notes must have a clear logical structure Logico -semantic relations are important in notes Parallel information can be presented along a vertical line SVO must be represented in some way – diagonal layout or some other forms you prefer Question: Do I have to keep an SVO structure in note-taking?

Use of symbols in note-taking Quicker than writing words and sentences One symbol for one type of concepts , which could be realized by different lexicogrammatical forms Save time, and save space 7/06/2024 8

What kind of concepts can be symbolised : example Developed symbols: Country, %, currency… People: men, women, old people, children, teenager Circumstantial things: market, situation, circumstance, garden, street corner… Government and organisations “ Big words ”: world, globalization, internationalization, economy, culture… Logical relations : contradiction, concession, cause/effect, purpose, condition, exemplification… Things in finance: capital, fund, money, investment… Abstract things : problem, crisis, issues, challenges, subjects, disciplines Cognition and emotions: locution, ideas, positive, negative, concern, imagination, worry, angry, frustration… Temporal relations : before, after, since, ago, later… Tendency: Development, growth, advancement… Symbolise the frequently used items – you will find them during practice.

Basic logico-semantic relations (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014) parataxis hypotaxis expansion elaborating 1 John didn’t wait; =2 he ran away. α John ran away, =β which surprised everyone. Extending: for contrast, for comparison, in addition, not only.. but also.. 1 John ran away, +2 and Fred stayed behind. α John ran away, +β whereas Fred stayed behind. Enhancing: when; how; why; where; about what; concession 1 John was scared, x2 so he ran away. α John ran away, xβ because he was scared. projection locution 1 John said: “2 “I’m running away.” α John said “β he was running away. idea 1 John thought to himself: ‘2 ‘I’ll run away’. α John thought ‘β he would run away.

Symbols in note-taking

Let’s have a try … Exercise : Invent some symbols before the exercise – immigration; change; application; Australia ; sponsor ; monopoly; difficult; common logical relations (because, but, so, …) Take notes during listening . Pay attention to : semantic chunking ; parallel information ; logico -semantic types ; use of symbols Interpret what you have heard based on the notes Reflection : Did you do well ? Did notes help ? Did you feel you have noted down too much ? Did note -taking distract you from listening comprehension ? Now take a look at the example notes

Lawyer’s updates on visa application and English tests Now take a look at the example notes

Sample note-taking 7/06/2024 17

What have we found so far : A lot of repeated information can be represented by down arrows or other symbols you like to use You take notes of meaning , not wording . You need to develop your own symbols

Practice procedure and tips Start from narratives on subjects that you are familiar with Then practise on argumentative talks or debates (a lot of resources can be found at abc.net.au ). Make sure these talks are on subjects that you are familiar with. Try narratives on subjects that you don’t know much about. Then try practising on argumentative talks or debates on topics that you are not very familiar with. Move onto formal speeches on a topic that you are familiar with (e.g., a speech delivered by the Education Minister on Australia’s university student exchange program with XX) Finally, you should practise high register speeches on subjects that you are not very familiar with (such as UN assembly talks on developing countries’ carbon emission schemes). Limit the length of each segment : around 100 words or 50 seconds

Final advice Note-taking is a highly individualised activity – you don’t have to copy other’s format, but the same general principles should apply Note-taking is NOT a decisive factor in interpreting performance – you need to find out at what stage your current problem lies Listening comprehension should always receive more attention than note-taking

Questions from students As you mentioned in class, we should extract information during the listening instead of word-for-word. But I am afraid that maybe it will cause an omission, especially when I interpret a speech. I found that I always want to remember every word the speaker said even though I know maybe it is impossible. The biggest problem for me, is that I do not trust myself. Due to my lack of confidence, I highly rely on note-taking which will interfere with me when I am listening. Meanwhile , if I do not listen clearly or understand one keyword, I will stop in this sentence for seconds and miss the next sentence . 7/06/2024 21

Homework (W4 & 5) Exercise 1 at iLearn W4: Change management – develop a symbol list before doing this exercise Exercise 2 at iLearn W5: AI and interpreting
