HISTORY OF TRAVEL The history of traveling as part of leisure in the ancient times can be traced back to Greek happenings when people took trips and gathered for special sporting occasion. The most common travel purposes that took place were meant for Olympics or visits to the Oracle at Delphi.

Some early trips for pleasure were also popular in Egypt to see the Great Pyramid of Giza containing tombs which were considered to be the largest manmade structures on the planet of millennia.

Studying how accessibility took place during ancient times, ruins of primeval land passage systems serve as path of evidence for scholars discovering roads that led to Rome. These components perform various industrial functions in providing essential services needed to establish a complete tourist experience. The components include: 1 . Travel Agencies serving as intermediaries between supplier(airline) and the purchaser (passenger).

2. Online Travel Agencies(OTAs)- selling accommodation , transportation and other travel services that can be availed through the virtual booking process for the client's convenience . 3. Tour Operators aggregating all or most of the components of a trip then sells them to a traveler individually or travel agencies in bulk.

4. Destination Marketing Organization (DMOs) promoting development and marketing plans for destination consisting of national tourism offices, and Visitor bureaus. 5. Destination Management Companies(DMCs) specializing in designing and coordinating corporate programs and event.

The commerce of travel services in the industry is made up of a complex system and web of networks between a variety of suppliers coming from different sectors . These sectors support the delivery of tourist experience based on their needs and demands to be met which are : 1. Accommodation 2.Transportation 3.food and beverage 4. Attractions 5.meetings,incentives , conferences and exhibitions(MICE) 6 . Adventure and recreation 7. Tourism services 8.travel trade Travel services are the essentials and functional components that tourist need in planning, arranging and realizing trips.

Tour Services As defined previously, tour pertains to a journey or a trip done for the purpose of pleasure, business ,pilgrimage, education or other forms. These purposes are served by private sectors in the industry to provide the facilities and experience for tourist.

More thorough than what travel services are, tour services consist of detailed components, including but not limited to: 1.Access to attractions 2.Transport facilities 3.Recreational activities 4.Circuit and sightseeing 5.Dining facilities 6.Tour guide services

Tour services are intangible products of tourism businesses delivered in imperceptible representations. Some services that belong are: 1. assistance on bookings for accommodations, museums, theme parks theatres and various sites. 2.Transport of tourist from one place to another. 3.Information and education that are given to tourist during the tour. 4.Tourist’s experience by visiting destinations, enjoying an activity and dining in a restaurant and 5.Tourist’s memories which are created through experience and satisfaction, meeting or exceeding their expectation.

The Key Suppliers of Travel and Tour Services The private sector of tourism industry is composed of businesses and commercial enterprises whose primary aims are to make a profit and deliver customer satisfaction. These businesses are what make the tourism industry function as a system and create a sign significant ripple effects to both primary and secondary sectors that are interconnected to each other.

The following categorize the key suppliers of travel and tour services in the industry that belongs under the private sector. Transportation plays a role a vital role in the tourism industry system. It serves as a catalyst for accessibility for travels to reach their destination from their origin. This sector is classified into three bases- air, sea and land transport.

Airlines Airlines carry passengers for distant land and overseas destinations through either a small or a large carrier. The small carriers also known as commuter airlines have a capacity of not exceeding 30 seats while large carriers or the so called major airlines can accommodate passengers ranging from 100-800 seats.

Ferries Travel by sea-based vessels is another means of transportation. Trips through ferries are way cheaper than through airlines; however, availability is scarcer and longer traveling time has to be considered compared to the latter.

Water-based transportations can be classified into four(4) categories- The Bangkas , ROROS, fast crafts and passenger lines . 1. Bangkas also known as pump boat or lantsa , carry passengers for shorter trips between islands. These boats are usually wooden with set two bamboo outriggers on both sides that can accomodate around 50 but not exceeding to kore than 100 passengers.

2. ROROs which stand for Roll-on-Roll-off, are water based vessels designed to carry passengers and land-based transportation vehicles. These vessels have either built-in or shore-based ramps that allow the cargo to be efficiently rolled on and off the vessel when in port.

3.Fast crafts are smaller yet high -speed ferries that carry passengers only, not designed for vehicles and large cargo. With an efficient and comfortable transportation service that they offer, fast crafts usually charge double the price of an ordinary ferry.

4.Passenger lines are large ships recommended for long-distance sea travels providing a wider range of services facilities. Land Transports The following are the most common land-based transportation types that are catered to travelers inclusive in tour packages. 1.Motorcoach is a bus with fewer doors used for city and moderate distance drivers.

2.Shuttle bus is a large low-floor type of bus that can accommodate a huge volume of passengers usually picking up and dropping off passengers from the airport to hotels. In most cases, airports hotels offer fee shuttle services than complimentary breakfast.

3.Mini-bus/Mini-coach is type of land-based transport vehicle usually smaller in size than an ordinary bus catering exclusive service for group or family travelers . 4. Private car is the most common arranged transportation service for passengers who prefer to have a private and exclusive transfer service to avail. These are usually cars that are four- seater or seven seater by capacity.

Types of buses in Western Countries: 1. Single-decker bus- a bus that has one floor/deck. 2.Double-decker bus- a bus that has two floors/decks. 3.Low-floor bus- a bus designed for the convenience of traveling public usually available in large cities . 4.Articulated bus- a bus that can bent in the middle to be flexible enough in moving even in narrow streets.

5 . Electric Bus- a bus that is electrically rechargeable and does not require fuel to function . 6.Trolley Bus- a bus that gets energy from electric cable instead of fuel. 7.Rail Bus- a bus that runs guided by a railway like a train. 7.Rail Bus- a bus that runs guided by a railway like a train.

Car Rentals Similar to buses and coaches, car rental is a land-based transportation facility however differs itself from the nature of the service that it offers. This type of service includes the "hiring" of motor cars for a relatively short period time.

A car hire agency is a company that provides automobiles for rent for a short period of time which fees many vary depending on the distance of travel and duration of use. Some are often organized with where the markets exist. Their service distributions are commonly extended in hotels, airport lounges, information centers, and websites for online reservations.
