Elements Novel

Characters

Bella Swan

Bella Swan is an average, yet slightly gawkish and unconfident teenage girl. She is of average height and weight and has a pale complexion, brown hair, and brown eyes. Bella lives with her divorced father in Forks, Washington, where she attends high school. Her most notable quality is her caring devotion to her friends and family despite her frequent inability to protect the ones she loves. She is caring, yet vulnerable given her dangerous relationship with the Cullens . Her human morality contrasts her lover, Edward, who is an immortal vampire. Bella is fascinated by vampiric culture and wishes she were one herself, though a major conflict in the novel involves Edward's wish for her to remain human .

Edward Cullen

Edward Cullen is a vampire and the love interest of Bella Swan. He was born in 1901 and was bitten by vampire Carlisle Cullen in 1918, rendring him immortal at age 17. He is described as extremely physically attractive, with a smooth, pale complexion, bronze hair, and golden eyes. Edward lives with his "siblings" Alice, Rosalie, Jasper, and Emmett, who are also vampires, though they are not biologically related. They pose as high school students in Forks in an effort to blend into society. The Cullens are nomadic, as staying in one place for too long would draw suspicion given their inability to age .

During the events of New Moon, Edward physically and emotionally distances himself from Bella for fear of placing her in danger with their relationship. By nature, Edward is highly protective of those he loves, though he can initially come across as standoffish and cold. One of his supernatural abilities include mind-reading, though he is unable to read Bella's thoughts. He also has superhuman strength and speed.

Jacob Black

In the beginning of the series, Jacob Black is Bella's mortal friend who belongs to the Native American Quileute tribe. Later, it is discovered that he, along with other members of the tribe, are werewolves. Jacob is described as having tan skin, brown eyes, and a muscular build. The tribe's past includes conflict with the vampires, which was settled by an ancient peace treaty that forced both parties to stay off each others predetermined territory. Due to this deeply rooted conflict, and Jacob's friendship with Bella, Jacob and Edward do not like each other.

During New Moon, Jacob and Bella's friendship deepens as he provides her with emotional comfort after Edward's unexpected departure. He falls in love with Bella, though she does not reciprocate his romantic advances. Despite Bella's lack of romantic feelings for Jacob, she still views him as a pillar of stength and deeply values their friendship .

Rosalie Cullen

Rosalie is a vampire and a non- bioligical sibling to Edward. Upon first meeting Bella, Rosalie acts cold and uninviting. It is later revealed that Rosalie is simply jealous of Bella's mortality, as Rosalie did not have the choice of becoming a vampire. Rosalie is guarded, which can register as standoffish to those who don't know her. Later, however, she proves herself a caring and loyal friend to Bella. Rosalie has a romantic relationship with Emmett, another vampire adopted by Carlisle Cullen.

Charlie Swan

Charlie is Bella's somewhat awkward, yet loving father. He is a cop in Forks and divorced Bella's mother, Renee, whe Bella was a child. When Bella moves in with Charlie, their relationship is initially strained, as Charlie knows very little about Bella from the time that has elapsed while she was living with her mother. He is reserved and gawkish , like Bella .

Emmett Cullen

Emmett Cullen was adopted by Carlisle and changed into a vampire in 1935. At age 20, Emmett was mauled by a black bear, but was saved by Rosalie, who convinced Carlisle to make him immortal. Emmett is the love interest of Rosalie. He is described as broad in stature and muscular, with brown hair and the trademark golden eyes of a vampire. Emmett is outspoken, easygoing, and physically the strongest out of all of the Cullens .

Alice Cullen

Besides Edward, Alice Cullen is Bella's closest friend and forms a deep connection with her after the events of the first novel. Alice is petite, with short, dark hair. She ha s a warm, bubbly personality. Her unique supernatural ability allows her to see future events and warn others of impending danger. It is beause of this that she forsees Edward's suicide attempt and returns to Forks to warn Bella. Alice has a romantic relationship with Jasper Cullen .

Jasper Cullen

Jasper is the "newest" vampire to be bitten by Carlisle, which causes him to be more vulnerable than others to the desire for human blood. During a birthday party for Bella, Bella gets a papercut on a piece of wrapping paper, driving Jasper insane with bloodlust. Bella narrowly escapes an attack by Jasper, causing Jasper to become deeply ashamed of his nature. Jasper is sensitive and morally conflicted, choosing to become a "vegetarian" vampire, or one who preys solely on animals and refuses to take blood from humans .

Carlisle and Esme Cullen

Carlisle and Esme are the unofficial parents of Edward, Rosalie, Alice, Emmett, and Jasper. They are both warm, caring individuals and will do whatever it takes to keep their family safe. Carlisle Cullen saved each Cullen family member from death by making them immortal with his bite. Esme has strong maternal instincts despite having no biological children herself and is considered to be the most humanistic of the Cullens .

The Volturi

The Volturi are a highly powerful Italian vampire coven. Its main members include Aro , Caius, Aro's wife Sulpicia , and Caius' wife Athenodora . The Volturi "guard", whose job is to protect the Volturi , consists of Jane, and Alec. In the vampiric hierarchy, the Volturi are considered royalty. They are the antagonists in New Moon . The Volturi establish laws which all vampires are expected to follow. One of these laws states that vampires must not attract attention to themselves, such as exposing themselves to direct sunlight. In a suicide attempt, Edward prepares to do so by exposing his skin in front of a large gathering of mortals, thus placing himself in danger of the Volturi .

Renee

Renee is Bella's eccentric, often flighty and overly idealistic mother. Her personality contrasts Bella's who is guarded and pragmatic. For this reason, Bella often has difficulty relating to her mother as they are so different in nature. Renee remarried to Phil, who is a professional baseball player.

Embry Call

Embry is one of Jacob’s close friends. He is described as tall and slender, with chin-length black hair. He is the first of the trio to join Sam Uley’s “gang” by transforming into a werewolf .

Quil Ateara

The other of Jacob’s two close friends, Quil is described as short and muscular with short, buzzed hair. Quil does not become a werewolf during New Moon, so he never really understands why Embry and Jacob distance themselves from him. He is afraid of being the next one to join Sam’s “gang,” but there are several indications that he will shortly become a werewolf.

Sam Uley

First introduced when he finds Bella lost in the woods, Sam is the alpha werewolf, being the first to transform and the oldest. Many of the werewolves have trouble controlling their temper, which causes them to morph into werewolves unexpectedly, but Sam has more experience, and therefore more control over himself .

Emily

Emily is Sam’s fiancée. She is very motherly toward Jacob and the other werewolves, often cooking for them and letting them gather in her home. When Sam first became a werewolf, before he could control his temper, he accidentally morphed into a werewolf when Emily was near, scratching her down her right face and arm, leaving a red scar .

Paul and Jared

Two more were wolves in Sam’s pack .

Laurent

Laurent is one of the vampires from James’ coven in Twilight. He tries to kill Bella and suck her blood, but the werewolves chase him away. Bella fears Laurent for over a week until she learns the werewolves killed him.

Victoria

Victoria is James’ mate from Twilight. She is trying to kill Bella but is constantly thwarted by the wolves. Throughout much of the novel, Victoria is a huge threat but is never defeated, a conflict that carries over to the next book in the series, Eclipse .

Setting

Forks, Washington Bella spent a lot of her time depressed in her house because of Edward leaving. When she got a little better she started socializing with her friends and going out places.

Volterra , Italy Bella and Alice rushed here so they could stop Edward from revealing himself. Also, here, Alice shows the Volturi that Bella will one day be a vampire. Because of that the Volturi decides not to kill her for knowing too much about vampires .

Jacobs House After Edward leaves she finds herself spending more time with Jacob. Most of the time she is over his house watching him work on the bikes. Jacob seems to heal the whole in her heart, that Edward left, when she is with him.

Conflict

This book’s conflict is about Bella’s problem trying to forget about Edward. She almost fixes her problem by hanging out with Jacob. She didn’t succeed because she stopped talking to her because of the changes going on with himself. No matter what in the end she goes back to thinking about Edward. The only way that she is able to see him is if she does reckless things. She decides to go cliff jumping but gets caught in the water. Alice who was still keeping tabs on her sees this and mistakes if for her committing suicide. Edward finds out about this and then goes to the Volturi in Italy to die. Bella then goes with Alice to save him from his death.

Summary

Edward leaves Bella after an attack that nearly claimed her life, and, in her depression, she falls into yet another difficult relationship - this time with her close friend, Jacob Black. After Bella recovers from the vampire attack that almost claimed her life, she looks to celebrate her birthday with Edward and his family. However, a minor accident during the festivities results in Bella's blood being shed, a sight that proves too intense for the Cullens , who decide to leave the town of Forks, Washington for Bella and Edward's sake. Initially heartbroken, Bella finds a form of comfort in reckless living, as well as an even-closer friendship with Jacob Black. Danger in different forms awaits .

Thrilled to bits about her upcoming eighteenth birthday shortly after the unexpected encounter with the supernatural in Twilight (2008 ), instead, Bella comes face-to-face with her worst fear and an unforeseen complication in the wake of a near-death incident. Utterly convinced that his undead presence can only bring pain--or, even worse, death--a firm Edward decides that the best thing to do is to disappear from rainy Forks and the life of his only true love forever, leaving Bella heartbroken and vulnerable. Now, as the ardent youthful passion turns into bitter despair, Bella turns to her attractive childhood friend, Jacob Black, to find solace, unbeknownst to her that he, too, has something to hide. More and more, danger encircles Bella. Is Jacob or Edward the one who will save her ?

Bella Swan is still very much in love with vampire, Edward Cullen. The rest of the vampire coven who call themselves the Cullens , especially Alice, decide to throw Bella a private party for her eighteenth birthday. Things go wrong, and as a result of the danger Bella was put through, the Cullen family decide to leave Forks, Washington. At first Bella exempts herself from all social activities, until she realizes she can coexist with childhood friend, Jacob Black. As usual for Bella, things aren't what they seem. Something is happening to Jacob that he can't explain to Bella, and their friendship starts to deteriorate. But when someone from Bella's past comes back to haunt her, everything will change again .

Last time we see saw Bella Swan she was narrowly escaping the clutches of the evil vampire James while finding love with ''vegetarian'' vampire Edward Cullen. Bella and Edward's lives have been full of nothing but love and bliss however, it all changes one fateful day. On Bella's birthday, her new found friend and sister of Edward, Alice, decides to throw her lavish party, complete with balloons, ribbons and cake. Edward decides that while he and his family are around, Bella's life will always be at risk. So he decides to leave her for her own good. Bella feels her life is over. Enter Jacob Black, a member of the Quilite tribe who manages to bring some joy and meaning back into Bella's life.

However as the two become closer, Bella discovers Jacob has a secret of his own. As if that wasn't bad enough Bella can't seem to get the love of her life, Edward out of her mind. With new dangers, new friends and new enemies, Bella finds herself choosing between holding on to the past or accepting a new future. But what and more importantly who will she choose?

Moral Lesson

Love is a force outside our understanding that we value above everything else in our lives. Our love for our families, friends, significant other, and even our pets is so powerful that it is impossible to ignore. We value our capability to love, it is what makes us human.

Twilight will teach future students about our society today through its morals and values that the characters display. Twilight shows how our society values how love can change a person, a person’s religious belief (or disbelief), and our love for finding true love. Future students will need to understand our society to learn how theirs was created, where it came from. By studying and analyzing books, movies, and more from different time periods, students can learn about the society of that time and see how the society has developed over the years to get where it is.

For example, students today learn how women and African Americans gained equal rights. This shows why our society is the way it is, people stood up and made a change so now our society has changed. Twilight shows how in our society we value true love and finding true love, in the future the society might change and our values now could change. Students can learn how the society they live in is the way it is and gain a better understanding of their history, society, and the world around them. Twilight is just one example of our society’s values shown through books and movies. Twilight gives a reader a better understanding our society and our quest in life to find true love, no matter how rare we know it is .

Literary Devices

Symbolism

The Meadow To Bella, the meadow in the forest is a reminder of a past life with Edward. The meadow is described as perfectly symmetrical and serene. It represents Bella’s ideal life. With Edward, everything was perfect, but now that he is gone, Bella has no hope of obtaining the life she longs for. In the same way, the meadow was more beautiful with the sun, Bella’s life was more complete with Edward .

The Woods The forest represents confusion, disorientation, and uncertainty. Edward broke up with Bella on the edge of the forest, but she ran into the woods, wandering aimlessly, trying to process what was going on. Her dreams usually take place in the forest because it is too painful for Bella to think clearly about Edward or any of the other Cullens . When Bella meets Laurent in the forest, Laurent tells her that Victoria is hunting her, which disorientates her. Then, Bella sees the wolves, which confuses and upset her more .

Photographs Before Edward leaves, Bella takes several pictures of him with a camera she received for her birthday. When Edward leaves, he promises that Bella’s life will proceed like he never existed, which he attempts to fulfill by taking all of her photographs of him. The pictures represent Bella’s memory. Though Edward tried to erase Bella’s memory, he could not. Edward actually left the pictures underneath the floorboards of Bella’s bedroom, representing that as Bella suppressed her memories of Edward, they faded into her subconscious, but never went away .

Foreshadowing

The reader can notice the foreshadowing at the beginning of the book, when Bella has a nightmare. Bella thinks that she sees her late grandmother in her dream, but in fact, she sees her reflection in the mirror in old age and next to her is the same young Edward. It foreshadows the fact that if Edward does not turn Bella into a vampire, she will become an old woman .

Flashback

A flashback shows a mother and her immortal child killed and burned. The Cullens and friends practice their fighting skills before facing the Volturi . Vampires exhibit a variety of talents, including electric shock, telepathic torture, and manipulating the elements. In a climactic battle scene, various characters some of them shocking—are injured, beheaded, burned, tortured and hurt .

Figure of Speech

Simile It’s like a huge hole has been punched through my chest . As soon as you put the dog out.   I decided as long as I'm going to hell, I might as well do it thoroughly. Jacob is simply a perpetually happy person, and he carries that happiness with him “like an aura, sharing it with whoever is near him. Like an earthbound sun” , whenever someone is within his gravitational pull, Jacob warms all people.

Metaphor “It feels like “ time has frozen , because the forest looks the same” no matter how far Bella goes. Tonight the sky is “utterly black ”. “Silence is hell .”

Hyporbole " I honestly have no idea how to live without you .“ " After all the thousand times I’ve told you I love you, how could you let one word break your faith in me ?"

Personification " Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars, points of light and reason. ...And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason, for anything .“ " Well, I'm so sorry that I can't be the right kind of monster for you, Bella ."

Anaphora " You’re not asleep, and you’re not dead. I’m here, and I love you. I have always loved you, and I will always love you. I was thinking of you, seeing your face in my mind, every second that I was away. When I told you that I didn’t want you, it was the very blackest kind of blasphemy ."

"Time passes. Even when it seems impossible. Even when each tick of the second hand aches like the pulse of blood behind a bruise. It passes unevenly, in strange lurches and dragging lulls, but pass it does. Even for me ." "I promise that this will be the last time you’ll see me. I won’t come back. I won’t put you through anything like this again. You can go on with your life without any more interference from me. It will be as if I’d never existed ."

Paradox " These violent delights have violent ends ..."

Imagery

Reflection in the mirror Bella has a dream, where she sees her grandmother. Her face looks just the same as Bella remembers it. The skin is “soft and withered with a thousand tiny creases." It is like “a dried apricot”, but with “a putt of thick white hair standing out in a cloud around it.” Their mouths spread into the same surprised half-smile at just the same time. Then Bella realizes that this old woman is she. The imagery of the old woman gives an impression of Edward’s future girlfriend, if he does not turn Bella into a vampire .

The pain of being abandoned Love , life and meaning are over for Bella, when Edward leaves Bella after their long relations. “With shaky legs”, ignoring the fact that Bella’s action is useless, she follows him into the forest. “There are no footprints and the leaves are still again.” It feels like “time has frozen, because the forest looks the same” no matter how far Bella goes. Tonight the sky is “utterly black”. The rain bothers Bella a little. “It is cold.”

A place with pleasant memories Bella often visits the place, where she and Edward had a good time. It is a place, where Bella has never seen another clearing so symmetrical. It is as “perfectly round” as if someone has intentionally created “the flawless circle, tearing out the trees but leaving no evidence of that violence in the waving grass.” To the east, Bella can hear “the stream bubbling quietly.” The place is not nearly “so stunning without the sunlight”, but it is still “very beautiful and serene.” The imagery of the glade gives an impression of perfect memories about Bella’s love .

Werewolves When Bella sees Jacob’s friends-werewolves for the first time, they are not what Bella is expecting. These are just “four big half-naked boys.” Again, they remind Bella of brothers, quadruplets. Something about the way, they move almost “in synchronization” to stand across the road from Bella and Jacob, the way they all have “the same long, round muscles under the same red-brown skin, the same-cropped black hair”, and the way their expressions alter at exactly the same moment. “They start out curious and cautious.” The imagery of werewolves gives an impression of force, power and fear .
