Counselling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals.
PROCESS OF COUNSELLIG It is a cooperative process in which a trained professional helps a person to identify sources of difficulties or concerns that he/she is experiencing. Together they develop ways to deal with and overcome these problems so that the person has new skills and increased understanding of themselves and others .
STAGES OF COUNSELLING
ESTABLISHING RELATIONSHIP The first stage of the counselling process involves the building of a relationship or a rapport between the client and the counsellor. The first interview is very important as it is an initial stage where the client starts reading the verbal and non-verbal messages of the counsellor and make inferences about the counsellor. It is important for the client to become comfortable with the counsellor.
ASSESSMENT While the counsellor and the client are in the process of building a relationship ,the second stage starts taking place i.e. the problem assessment. In this stage the client shares the problem bothering him or any reason of his visit to the counsellor . This step involves the collection and classification of information about the problems of the client .
GOAL SETTING The third stage in the counselling process is supposed to be an important one . Setting goals is important to the success of counselling. It sort of means a commitment or a certain assurance to a set of conditions, to a course of action or an outcome .
INTERVENTIONS Intervention basically means action taken to improve a medical disorder. There are different points of view concerning what a good counsellor should do with clients depending on the theoretical positions that the counsellor subscribes to.
EVALUATION,TERMINATION,REFFERAL In the beginning it is difficult to think of terminating the counselling process as the counsellor is more concerned about beginning the counselling process. However, all counselling aims towards successful termination. Terminating the counselling process is supposed to be conducted with sensitivity with the client .
TYPES OF COUNSELLING There is a number of counselling which take place these days. They are mainly divided as per the various fields. This allows people to choose the counsellor as per their specific problem. Moreover, this assures the counsellor doing the work is a specialist in their respective field. The following are the most common types of counselling.
MARRIAGE/RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING Communication problems, sex, anger, even illness can contribute to problems in a marriage or relationship. To manage conflicts and stress, couples sometimes turn to marriage counselling or couples counselling to help heal the relationship.
CARRER/EDUCATIONAL COUNSELLING It is a comprehensive, developmental program designed to assist individuals in making and implementing informed educational and occupational choices. A career guidance and counselling program develops an individual's competencies in self-knowledge, educational and occupational exploration, and career planning.
REHABILITATION COUNSELLING Rehabilitation counselling has been described as a process where the counsellor works collaboratively with the client to understand existing problems, barriers and potentials in order to facilitate the client's effective use of personal and environmental resources for career, personal , social and community adjustment following disability.
MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLING Mental health counselling is basically on any kind of mental disturbances faced by any individual. This can actually help you overcome your difficulties at a faster rate than expected it to be. We might be able to handle the primary stages of these, but once getting worse that the people around us will be the ones who will face difficulties. It will also help you to be positive in many ways and will help you to be more happy and energetic.
SUBSTANCE/DRUG ABUSE COUNSELLING This is for those who actually take in substances like Ganja and various other substances. This session is basically done to bring them out of the excess usage of substances. These days we can also find juveniles doing the same and getting into many criminal activities as well, so they are also being focussed and brought to these sessions.
SPIRITUAL COUNSELLING Spiritual counselling is a type of counselling that focuses on a person’s spiritual side. There are a couple of reasons why a person may consider spiritual counselling. First of all, they may seek out spiritual counselling to explore or solidify their own spiritual beliefs. Some people might also seek out the guidance of spiritual counsellors when they need help solving other problems in their lives, based on their spiritual beliefs.
