times when you lack themotivation and confidence to speak.

and together
• Interpersonal communication is the exchange of
information between two or more people. As long
as you are communicating with another person,
you're involved in interpersonal communication.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 02
• Interpersonal communication meant to establish or
deepen one's relationship with others, less seriousness and
formality, meant for maintaining social relationships.
• Transactional communication meant to achieve
something at the end of the conversation, it is more formal
and profound, and it aims to accomplish or resolve
something at the end of the conversation.

ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION 04

for the company.
• A set of rules or standards for communication
protocol should be made clear so that
interaction patterns are established.

TWO TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURES:
FORMAL AND INFORMAL
• Formal structure allows communication
to take place via designated channels of
message flow between positions in the
organization.

FOUR APPROACHES OF FORMAL STRUCTURE
1. Downward communication
- Communication flows from upper to lower position.
- The flow of communication is from top-down or from a
superior to a subordinate.
2. Upward communication
- Communication is from bottom-up in which subordinates
send communication to their superior/ bosses bearing their
views / feedbsck on organizational policies, issues related to
their job.

FOUR APPROACHES OF FORMAL STRUCTURE
3. Horizontal communication
- The communication is lateral in approach as it takes place
among people belonging to the same level but coming from
different departments or units to facilitate performance of
tasks through proper coordination.
4. Crosswise communication
- The communication is diagonal in nature as employee from
different units or departments working at various levels
communicate with each other.

• Informal structure comes from unofficial channels or
message flow.
- 'grapevines', messages coming from different levels of the
organization are transmitted.
- Each organization has its own culture. This is referred to as
'organizational culture'. Organizational culture dictates the
kind of behaviour that employees should possess and the
extent of commitment expected from them by the
organization

INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION 05
• Intercultural communication is the
verbal and nonverbal interaction
between people from different
cultural backgrounds.
