What is Control ? Taking preventive or corrective action to keep things on track Checking, Testing, Regulating, Verifying or Adjusting Objectives are yardsticks for measuring actual performance Purpose: Get the job done despite environmental, organizational, and behavioural obstacles and uncertainties
Types of Control
Feedforward control Most desirable type of control Prevents anticipated problems since it takes place before the actual activity Example—At St. Joseph's Hospital in West Bend, Indiana, a new facility was designed with identical rooms, nonslip floors, and glass walls to reduce errors in patient care and to increase employee safety
Concurrent control The process of monitoring and adjusting ongoing activities Takes place while an activity is in progress Example- A floor manager actively measuring each component of the operation with a checklist to identify issues as they occurs
Feedback control Involves gathering of information , evaluating and improving the activities in future Takes place after the activity is done Example—Dominos used feedback control to add new recipes for its betterment
Conclusion Required to measure the gap between the actual and the predicted outcome Helps to rectify the gap with corrective measure Takes place at various stages so as to minimize the flaws Managers anticipate problems before they arise and can give rigorous specifications to avoid defaults Allows managers to correct problems as they arise so as to avoid rectification cost Customer reaction to products are used to take corrective action in the future so as to provide better service/product in future
