Types of Flowers An overview of classification of flowers
Introduction Flowers are the reproductive structures of angiosperms. They play an important role in reproduction, pollination, and aesthetics.
Based on Reproductive Organs • Complete Flowers – Have all four whorls (sepals, petals, stamens, carpels) • Incomplete Flowers – Missing one or more whorls • Perfect Flowers – Have both stamens and carpels • Imperfect Flowers – Have either stamens or carpels
Based on Symmetry • Actinomorphic – Radial symmetry (e.g., Mustard, Hibiscus) • Zygomorphic – Bilateral symmetry (e.g., Pea, Orchid)
Based on Position of Ovary • Hypogynous – Ovary above other parts (e.g., Mustard) • Perigynous – Ovary at same level (e.g., Rose) • Epigynous – Ovary below other parts (e.g., Guava)
Based on Number of Petals • Monocot Flowers – Floral parts in multiples of 3 (e.g., Lily) • Dicot Flowers – Floral parts in multiples of 4 or 5 (e.g., Sunflower, Rose)
