What is hand washing ? Hand washing (or handwashing ) also known as hand hygiene is the act of cleaning hands for the purpose of removing soil, dirt and microorganisms . Minimum time of hand washing (general hand wash ) is 20 seconds L ather your hands by rubbing them together with soap .

Health benefits ~ Minimimizes the spread of influenza . ~ Prevents infectious cause of diarrhea. ~ Decrease respiratory infection. ~ Decrease infants mortality rate at home birth deliveries.

Adverse effects of excessive hand washing Drying of skin Skin damage However ever excessive hand washing does lead to diseases like Eczema : excessive hand washing can lead to an itchy ,flaky skin condition known as hand eczema or hand dermatitis .(which is especially common amoung health care workers.) Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD ) : is a mental disorder in which a person feels need to perform certain routines repeatedly .

Five critical times during the day (general hand washing ) Before feeding child Before preparing and eating food Handling raw meat ,fish , poultry etc. After touching garbage ,dirt ,waste ,soil etc. Fecal oral transmission : after defecation ,after cleaning child’s bottom.

Types of hand washing and hand hygiene Routine hand wash Use of water and non antimicrobial soap for the purpose of removing soil and transient microorganisms. Time : 20 seconds Antiseptic hand wash Use of water and antimicrobial soap (e.g. chlorhexidine , iodine and idophors , chloroxylenol , triclosan etc.) For the purpose of removing or destroying transient microorganisms and reduce resident flora Time : 40 to 60 seconds Surgical hand Wash Use of water and antimicrobial soap (e.g . chlorhexidine , iodine and idophors , chloroxylenol , triclosan etc .) For the purpose of destroying or removing transient microorganisms and reduce resident flora . Time : first scrub of the day 7 to 10 minutes . In between case scrub minimum 3 to 5 minutes .

Antiseptic handrub Use of alcohol based handrub . Time : 30 seconds
