TYPES OF INTERNET CONNECTION

One of the most common means of accessing the internet is through telephone lines. It is available globally and it was invented years before computer communications existed. While its original purpose is to provide voice communication, it has also paved the way for computer connectivity. Eventually, other methods of internet connectivity have been introduced to expand the area it can cover.

Types of Internet Service

DIAL UP Dial-up – is the slowest type of internet connection. This type of connection uses the telephone line with aid of modem (modulator-demodulator). Once connection is set up the computers at both ends of the line will be able to communicate. However, using the landline and the internet at the same time is not allowed

DSL – or Digital Subscriber Line DSL – or Digital Subscriber Line uses broadband connection which makes it faster and more reliable than dial-up connection. It also connects to the internet through phone lines but does not require having a landline. This type of connection also permits using the landline and the internet at the same time

CABLE Cable – is the type that connects to the internet via cable TV but does not necessarily require having cable TV to establish connection. Cable lines can carry both TV and data signals and have its own dedicated line which makes it faster than both dial-up and DSL service. The disadvantage of this type is it’s only available where cable TV is available

SATELLITE Satellite – is the type of connection that uses broadband without requiring cable or phone lines but is slower than DSL or cable. It connects to the Internet through satellites orbiting Earth. Hence, it can be used almost anywhere around the world. The disadvantage of this type of connection is that it can be affected by the weather patterns .

3G AND 4G 3G and 4G – is usually used in mobile phones and connects wirelessly through the ISPs (Internet Service Provider) network. This type of connection is very convenient because it can be accessed anywhere as long as there is wireless signal. They are also not always as fast as DSL or cable

DEDICATED LINE Dedicated line – is the type of connection that uses permanent lines to provide continuous and reliable connection to the Internet. Majority of internet service providers and telecommunication companies use this kind of connection

What to consider in choosing an Internet Service Provider ( ISP) In choosing an Internet Service Provider (ISP), the first thing that must be checked is the ISPs available in the area. Family members, friends, and neighbors are usually essential source of information and suggestions when it comes to this part. They usually give good ideas of the types of ISP available in the area. Most ISPs offer a wide range of services with different Internet speeds. The speed is measured in Mbps (megabits per second). If intended for personal use such as email and social networking, around 2 to 5 Mbps is already an acceptable speed. However, if it is to be used to download music or stream videos, a higher speed is required.

Another thing to be considered is the cost of the service. ISPs have different charges when it comes to installation and monthly fees. Faster connections usually correspond to higher monthly fees.
