Types of literature review (Continue) Theoretical literature review. Traditional literature review. Scoping literature review . Argumentative literature review . Methodological literature review.
Systematic literature review. Systematic literature review is type of literature review that collects and critically analyzes multiple research studies or papers. It is often the first and essential step in writing the literature review. It is a smart and effective method for undertaking literature review. It is particularly used by research student and others fellows who are new to research.
Narrative literature review. It is selective review of the literature . It broadly covers any specific topic . It does not follow systematic methods to locate and synthesize articles.
Integrative literature review. The integrative literature review is a form of research that reviews and synthesizes representative literature on a topic in an integrated way. It is the methodology that provides synthesis of knowledge and applicability of results of significant studies to practice. It includes: (1) problem formulation, (2) data collection or literature search, (3) evaluation of data, (4) data analysis, and (5) interpretation & presentation of results.
Historical literature review. Historical reviews are focused on examining research throughout a period of time, often starting with the first time an issue, concept, theory, phenomena emerged in the literature, then tracing its evolution within the scholarship of a discipline. The purpose is to place research in a historical context to show familiarity with state-of-the-art developments and to identify the likely directions for future research.
Evaluative literature review. This unit introduces general research principles and qualitative, quantitative and mixed methodologies with a focus on ethical issues in the conduct of research. You will plan a research-based project, develop a research proposal and write your own ethics application.
Argumentative literature review. This form examines literature selectively in order to support or refute an argument, deeply imbedded assumption, or philosophical problem already established in the literature. The purpose is to develop a body of literature that establishes a contrarian viewpoint.
Theoretical literature review. The purpose of this form is to concretely examine the corpus of theory that has accumulated in regard to an issue, concept, theory and phenomena. The theoretical literature review helps to establish what theories are already existing, the relationships between them and to develop new hypotheses to be tested. Often this form is used to establish a lack of appropriate theories or reveal that current theories are inadequate for explaining new or emerging research problems.
Traditional literature review. A traditional literature review provides an overview of the research findings on particular topics. A traditional literature is written by examining a body of published work, then writing a critical summary (an impressionistic overview) of the body of literature. The purpose of a literature review is make clear for a reader what the research collectively indicates with regard to a particular issue or question.
Scoping literature review. It refers to a rapid gathering of literature in a given policy or clinical area where the aims are to accumulate as much evidence as possible and map the results . Scoping reviews is exploratory project that systematically map the literature on a topic, identifying key concepts, theories and sources of evidence. It’s aim to address broader, more complex, and exploratory research questions.
Methodological literature review. This approach provides a framework of understanding at different levels. It enables researchers to draw on a wide variety of knowledge ranging from the conceptual level to practical documents. It helps to highlight many ethical issues which we should be aware of and consider as we go through our study.
