About This Presentation

Pipe couplings can be made bigger or smaller on the inside to connect pipes of different sizes, or they can be bent to make bends or T-shaped to connect more than two pipes. Pipe joints can also have extra parts like inspection holes, flow meters, or valves.

Types of
Pipe
Coupling

Half Coupling
A half coupling splits a small bore pipe off a large bore pipe
or a vessel. It can have threads or be a hole. It only has one
end with a hole or thread. A socket weld half coupling can be
welded straight to a large bore pipe to make a branch
connection. It is used to cut off a small-bore pipe from a
large bore pipe when the small bore pipe needs to be
socket-welded. Only one end of a threaded half coupling has
a thread, and the other end should be a butt welding end
with either a plain end or a blade end.

Compression
Coupling
A compression coupling is used to connect two
pipes that are precisely aligned with each other. A
sleeve with slots and a tapered end is placed over
the joint, and then two flanges are pulled over the
sleeve to center the pipes and provide enough
contact pressure automatically.

Reducing
Coupling
With a reducing coupling, pipes of different sizes can be
joined together. Each side of a reducing coupler has threads
of various sizes. Reducing couplings usually connect small
process feed lines to big supply circuits or install small-
diameter fittings.
Reducing coupler pipes have a simple, stepped-down shape
and screw onto two pieces of pipe just like a regular pipe
joint.

Slip Coupling
A slip coupling sometimes called a repair coupling,
comprises two pipes, one of which moves out of the other
pipe and can be moved to different lengths. Slip coupling is
made without an internal stop so that it can be slid into
place in tight spaces. For example, it can be used to fix a
small leak in a pipe caused by corrosion, freeze-bursting, or
being briefly cut for some reason. Since the alignment stop is
missing, the person installing the slip coupler pipe should
carefully measure where it ends to ensure it is in the right
place.
