TYPES OF ROCKS (SUMMARY OF THREE TYPES OF ROCKS)

Slide Content

TYPES OF ROCK
SEDIMENTARY
Sedimentary rocks form through
the gradual accumulation and
compression of sediments. These
rocks frequently harbor fossils,
offering insights into ancient
environments. Types of
sedimentary rocks comprise
limestone, sandstone, and shale.
Igneous rocks are created when
molten material solidifies, either
as magma or lava. These rocks
can be intrusive, forming
beneath the Earth's surface and
cooling gradually, or extrusive,
forming on the Earth's surface
and cooling quickly. Some
common examples of igneous
rocks are granite, basalt,
obsidian, and pumice.

METAMORPHIC
Metamorphic rocks develop
when heat, pressure, and
chemical alterations transform
existing rocks. These rocks often
display a layered or banded
appearance. Examples of well-
known metamorphic rocks
include marble, slate, and
schist.
