TYPES OF SPEECH STYLE
A style is the set of linguistic variants that a person uses and that has specific social meanings. It is the choice of words that a person can use or apply in different situations. Being able to identify what style you are using when you communicate is essential in making sure that you are able to achieve your goal of sending your message and of being understood.
1. INTIMATE STYLE This type of style is used among intimate members of the family or friends . In this style, there is no need for long sentences or to be watchful of one’s grammar because doing so will just bring distraction to the intimacy of this style. Example: Him: Babe, where do you want to eat?” Her: Anywhere.
2. Casual style Casual style is also known as informal communication style . This type is typically used in sharing personal conversations with family members and friends. This is a type of relaxed or normal conversation and makes use of colloquial words . Example: “Hey, dude! You are rizz !”
3. CONSULTATIVE STYLE Consultative conversations take place between professionals such as between doctors and their patients or between lawyers and their clients. To consult is to ask or seek advice from a person , usually a professional who has an expertise on a specific subject or field. You use the consultative style of speech when talking to a doctor, lawyer, engineer, counselor, and other professionals who you think can help you with your need for information, advice, or opinion.
While professionalism and courtesy are expected when communicating using the consultative speech style, it would not hurt to be friendly. Sometimes, it makes the communication situation less tense and more comfortable even if it takes place in a professional setting.
Examples: regular conversation at schools, companies, group discussion, teacher-student, doctor-patient, expert-apprentice
4. FORMAL STYLE Formal style makes use of careful and standard speech because this is the style one adapts when in formal meetings and events. It makes use of low tempo speech, carefully chosen words, and technical vocabulary.
Used in speaking to medium to large groups May also be used in single hearers- strangers, older persons, professional Speaker must frame whole sentences ahead before they are delivered voids using slang terminologies language is comparatively rigid and has a set, agreed upon vocabulary that is well documented; is often of a standard variety
Examples: meetings, speeches, school lessons, court, a corporate meeting, at a swearing in ceremony, in an interview or in a classroom
5. FROZEN STYLE The frozen style is the most formal style that is used in formal events or ceremonies. If formal style makes use of carefully chosen words, frozen style makes use of “very” carefully chosen words, phrases, or sentences that are fixed in term.
Used generally in very formal setting. Most formal communicative style for respectful situation Does not require any feedback from the audience Usually uses long sentences with good grammar and vocabulary The use of language is fixed and relatively static
Examples: national pledge, anthem, school creeds, marriage ceremonies, speech for a state ceremony
