TYPES OF
NATURAL
VEGETATION

On the basis of certain common
features such as predominant
vegetation type and climatic
regions, Indian forests can be
divided into groups.

TROPICAL
RAIN
FORESTS
© Mansi Desai

Tropical Rain Forests are also known
as Tropical Evergreen Forests.
These forests promote greenery on
the planet but also help in continual
survival of plants and animals.
Tropical Rain Forests
© Mansi Desai

Found in areas receiving more than
200 cm of rainfall.
Average temperature is between 15°C
to 30°C.
They occupy about 7% of Earth’s
surface.
Characteristics
© Mansi Desai

Trees here are about 60 mts tall or
above.
They are found mostly near equator.
The forests are dense and multi-
layered.
There is more humidity due to scrubs.
Characteristics
© Mansi Desai

These forests are found on the
Eastern and Western Slopes of the
Western Ghats.
Geographical
Location

The states where these forests are
predominantly identified are Tamil
Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Assam,
Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland,
Tripura, Meghalaya, West Bengal,
Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

TROPICAL
DECIDUOUS
FORESTS
© Mansi Desai

They are called Monsoon Forests.
A long dry season followed by a heavy
rainfall season is a feature of the
regions where these forests are found.
Tropical Deciduous Forests
© Mansi Desai

The trees shed their leaves for 6 to 8
weeks during autumn.
Every species has a different time to
shed leaves, so all the leaves are never
without leaves during any season.

There are two types of Deciduous
Forests:
Moist Deciduous Forests – Mixture of
Trees and Grasses
Dry Deciduous Forests
Tropical Deciduous Forests

Annual Rainfall: 100-200 cm
Important Areas: Eastern states, along
the foothills of the Himalayas,
Jharkhand, West Orissa, Chhattisgarh
and Eastern Slopes of Western Ghats.

Annual Rainfall: 70-100 cm
Important Areas: Rainy areas of
Peninsular India, Plains of Uttar
Pradesh, Plains of Bihar.
Note: In the western and southern part of Rajasthan
vegetation cover is very scanty due to low rainfall.

TROPICAL
DESERT
VEGETATION
© Mansi Desai

Also known as Thorny Vegetation.
Found in areas less than 70 cm of
rainfall.
Natural Vegetation consists of Thorny
Trees and Bushes.
Tropical Desert vegetation
© Mansi Desai

Trees are scattered
Trees have long roots penetrating deep into
the soil to get moisture.
Stems are succulent to conserve water.
Leaves are mostly thick and small to minimize
evaporation.

These are found in the semi-arid areas of
Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh,
Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

MANGROVE
(TIDAL)
FORESTS
© Mansi Desai

A Mangrove is a small tree or shrub that
grows along coastlines, taking root in salty
sediments, often underwater.
The word ‘mangrove’ may refer to the habitat
as a whole or to the trees and shrubs in the
mangrove swamp.
Mangrove (tidal) forests
© Mansi Desai

Asia has the largest number of mangroves
worldwide.
South Asia comprises 6.8% of the world's
mangrove cover.
India's contribution is 45.8% total mangrove
cover in South Asia.

TEMPERATE
FORESTS &
GRASSLANDS
© Mansi Desai

The vegetation in Mountains varies with
altitude.
At 1000 to 2000 meters, Tropical Deciduous
forests are found.
Trees like Oak and Chestnut exist here.
These forests are found in the Foothills of
Himalayas, West Bengal and mountainous
regions of Uttarakhand.

At 1500 to 3000 meters, Coniferous Forests
are found.
Trees like Pine, Deodar, Silver fir, Spruce,
etc. are found.
Major areas are the Southern Slopes of the
Himalayas and higher areas of the South and
North East.

At 3000 meters and above, the vegetation
found is completely different. As the climate
gets cold, Alpine and Short Grasses are
Found. This is also called Tundra Vegetation.
Major Areas: Higher Altitudes of the
Himalayas and near the snow line.
Silver Fir, Juniper, and Birch are some of the
known vegetation.
