UDAP 101: JMU’s Utility Deposit Assistance Program

UDAP 101: The Basics Assists in the connection of utilities by eliminating deposit fees Water, Gas, Electricity JMU acts as a guarantor of bill payment for the student ( up to a certain limit ) $200 for gas $300 for electric $185 for water Purchased through MyMadison U D A P TILITY EPOSIT SSISTANCE ROGRAM

UDAP 101: The Language Utilities: water, gas, electrical (NOT cable or internet) Multiple meters: often found in apartment complexes and other multi-unit buildings; utilities will be monitored through meters located in a “multi meter bank” with other meters in the same location. Credit history: record of how an individual has borrowed and re-payed debt Guarantor: co-signer Credit rating: an evaluation of an individual's’ ability to repay debt

UDAP 101: Know The Facts Some properties include u tilities in the cost of rent, so you wouldn’t need a UDAP, but if you do… UDAP contracts can be purchased for the following academic year between April 1 st and July 31 st In effect from the time of purchase-July 31 st the following year Costs $ 35.00 and is charged to your student account Must be re-purchased each year, but only one person/household needs to purchase The person who purchases the UDAP will have all utilities in their name More than one household member can purchase a UDAP if bills are going to be split up If you move and need to set up new utilities there are steps you must take: Contact Shae Powell in order to purchase a new UDAP with your new address (this second fee will be waived by the University Business Office) Let the utilities companies know you are moving form your current address to a new one! UDAP 101: Overview of the Process Log into www.mymadison.jmu.edu Click on the “Student” tab Click on “Student Center” Here you see A cademics, Finances, Personal Information, & On-Campus Housing sections Under the Finances section, choose “UDAP Contract Purchase” from the “Other Financial” dropdown menu Make sure to enter t he address you will be moving to/where you will be connecting utilities under the “Service Address” section Also under the Finances section, click “View UDAP Contract” to view the completed contract

UDAP 101: The Contract (Phase 1) Make sure to input the address at which you want the utilities turned on! Double check with roommates to see if a UDAP has already been purchased. “Service Address” is the address where the utilities will be turned on. “Home Address” is the permanent residence listed for the student purchasing the UDAP.

UDAP 101: Know Your Responsibilities Connecting your utilities Purchasing a UDAP does not automatically connect these- you must contact the utilities providers personally Use the 5-digit contract # from the UDAP confirmation email Disconnecting your utilities (if you move OR sublease) Charges over the summer if the utilities are still connected under your name If JMU ever pays a utility bill… A financial hold will be placed on your account, which leads to complications with class registration, graduation, etc. If $ amounts on unpaid bills exceed UDAP limits, the excess is turned over to a collection agency after 3 months
