SEMINAR ON ADVANCE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY-I (MPC 102T) TOPIC: UGI REACTION Prepared By: Abu Saleh Nizam Uddin Siddik
A multi component reaction (MCR) between a ketone or aldehyde , an amine , an isocyanide and a carboxylic acid to form a bis -amide ( α- aminoacyl amide derivatives) . Reported first by Prof. Ivar Karl Ugi in the year 1959. INTRODUCTION
GENERAL REACTION
Exothermic Reaction. Usually completes in minutes after isocyanide addition. This is an uncatalyzed reaction. Has high atom economy as only a molecule of water is lost. High chemical yield. Changing substituents, R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 a huge chemical Libraries can be built. CHARACTERISTICS
REACTION MECHANISM
Ugi –Diels–Alder reaction
Exploited explicitly to develop chemical libraries. Using the principles of combinatorial chemistry it is used to synthesize a great number of different compounds in one reaction. Using the Ugi reaction in combination with other reactions enlarges the chemical diversity of possible products APPLICATIONS
Crixivan can be prepared using the Ugi reaction. Many of the caine -type anesthetics are synthesized using this reaction. Examples include lidocaine and bupivacaine . APPLICATIONS
