Introduction : - The modern psychological novel reflects a deeper and more searching inwardness of human experience. This turning inwardness was reflected in the writing of William James , Freud and Henry Bergson.

Definition of psychological novel :- “A with draw from the external phenomena into the flickering half shades of the author’s private world” H.J. mullan . “A type of fiction in which the explanation of the pre speech of consciousness for the purposes , primarily of revealing the psychic being of characters” Robert Humpharey .

“A direct quotation of the mind ,not merely of the language area but of the whole consciousness.” E. Bowling. “The psychological novel is also called as “psychological realism.”

The tern stream of consciousness firstly sued by William James in his “principles of psychology.’’ Virginia Woolf , James Joyce , Richardson , Henry James etc. have employed stream of consciousness technique in their novels.

Theory of Bergson :- Theory of Bergson is also played a remarkable role in the development of this type of novel and modern psychology. He believed that time can not be divided into minutes and seconds. According to him, human mind is made with three layer 1.Conscious mind 2.sub conscious mind 3. un conscious mind.

The role of realism:- In the 20 th century people did not like sentimental novel because they believed in realism . Psychological novel describes real situation of human mind . Therefore psychological novel became more popular during this time.

Life like characters:- Life like characters is another remarkable characteristic of psychological novel . The novelist presents thoughts emerging in the mind of characters . As a result he jumps from past to present and present to past.

Conclusion :- In a nutshell loose plot, illogical events, no importance of external action , pre speech level , description etc. are main characteristics of stream of consciousness.
