INTRODUCTION
TheUnanisystemofmedicineisoneoftheoldestandmostacceptable
systemsofmedicinepracticedinIndiaandallovertheworld.
UnaniMedicineisalsoverymodern,asithasbeenandisstillbeing
practisedasatraditionalmedicineinEurope,theMiddleEastandthe
Asiansubcontinent.
Thefirstphysicianofthesystemwasasclepedeuswholearntthe
principlesofmedicinefromHazratIdrees.
AnotherrenownedphysicianwasGalenwhoplayedamajorrolein
propagationofthesystemfarandwide.

INTRODUCTION
Unanimedicine,alsocalledUnanitibb,Arabianmedicine,orIslamic
medicine,atraditionalsystemofhealingandhealthmaintenanceobserved
insouthAsia.
TheoriginsofUnanimedicinearefoundinthedoctrinesoftheancient
GreekphysiciansHippocratesandGalen.
Asafield,itwaslaterdevelopedandrefinedthroughsystematicexperiment
bytheArabs,mostprominentlybymuslimscholar-physicianAvicenna.

Hippocratesputforwardthehumouraltheory,whichformedthebasicframework
ofthissystemofmedicine.HiseramarkedthebeginningoftheGoldenPeriodof
theUnanisystemofmedicine.
Healsoinitiatedtheconceptofhospitalandbuiltthefirsthospitaloftheworldin
Hamas(Egypt)aftertravellingaroundtheglobetofindasuitableplace.

PREVENTION
Any alteration in the equilibrium leads to disease.
Unani medicine has given great importance to the prevention of the
disease than cure.
There is an influence of surroundings and ecological conditions on health
of human being.

PREVENTION
There are six factors, which are essential for the maintenance of good health.
These essentials are as follows:
1. Air (Hawa)
2. Food and Drinks
3. Body movement and Repose
4. Mental movement and Repose
5. Sleep and Wakefulness
6. Retention and Evacuation

HUMOURAL THEORY
TheUnaniSystemofmedicineisbasedontheHumouralTheory.
Accordingtothistheorytherearefourhumoursinthebodyi.e.
Dam (Blood)
Balgham (Phlegm)
Safra(Yellow Bile)
Sauda(Black bile).

HUMOURAL THEORY
Thesearegeneratedinliverbythenutrientcomponentsoftheingested
foodandliquids.
Thereisastrongrelationshipbetweenabodyfluidanditsassociated
humoursoanyimbalanceinahumourwillalsocausechangesinthe
compositionandpropertiesofitsassociatedbodyfluid.
Healthisastateofbodyinwhichallthehumoursareinequilibriumand
inaccordancewiththeirowntemperamentandtheenvironment.

DIAGNOSIS
Firstly,thepractitionertakesafullcasehistory.
Thiswillhavemanyaspects,butgenerallyincludesobservationofthe
patient,
e.g.,observingapatientspostureandlisteningtotheirvoice,
Observingthetongueanditscoating,theeyes,
Thehandsandthefingernails.

DIAGNOSIS
Italsoalmostalwaysinvolvestakingthepulse(Nabz),whichoftentakes
alittletime,asthepractitionerdoesnotjusttakethepulserate,butalso
looksforsubtlechangesinthepulsethatmayindicatepresentor
threateninghealthconditions.
Inaddition,thepractitionermaypressreflexesandexaminetheurine
(Baul)andstool(Baraz)ofthepatient.
Thephysicianalsotakesintoaccountthedailyroutineofthepatient.

PRINCIPLES OF TREATMENT
InUnanisystemofmedicine,treatmentisbasedontemperamentandhumours.
Indiseasedcondition,thereisimbalanceinbodytemperamentandhumours.
Therefore,Unaniphysicianslaiddowntheprinciplesforthecorrectionoftemperament
andhumours.
Everyhumourhasaspecifictemperamentasdescribedearliere.g.hot,wet,cold,anddry.
So,thedrugusedforthetreatmentshouldpossesanoppositetemperamentthanthatof
diseasedhumour,resultinginnormalizationoftemperament.
Adisease,whichiscoldinnature,canbecuredbyadrug,whichhashottemperament.

METHODS OF TREATMENT
Treatment can be divided into four parts:
Dietotherapy
Pharmacotherapy
Regimental therapy
Surgery

METHODS OF TREATMENT
Treatmentdependsondegreeofvariationfromthenormalhealthycondition.
Dietotherapyisadvisedifthevariationislowfromthenormalhealthycondition,
butifthevariationissomuchthatcannotbecorrectedbyDietotherapyalone
thenpharmacotherapyisadvisedanddrugsareusedaccordingtothestageofthe
disease.
Inaddition,diet-o-therapyisalsoadvised,so,thediseasecanbecuredeasily.
Sometimes,regimentaltherapyandsurgeryarealsoadvisedalongwith
Dietotherapyandpharmacotherapy.
