UNCTAD
–TheUnited Nations Conference on Trade and Development(UNCTAD)
–Established in 1964, the permanent secretariat is in Geneva.
–UNCTAD was established by theUnited Nations General Assemblyin 1964
–Permanent intergovernmental body. so…..
–UNCTAD reports to the UN General Assembly andUnited Nations Economic and
Social Council.

–The conference ordinarily meets once in four years;
–At the Geneva meeting,Raul Prebisch—a prominent Argentinian economist from
the United Nations Economic Commission on Latin America and the Caribbean
(ECLA)--became the organization's first secretary-general.
–Secretary –general presently –MukishaKituyi-from Kenya since1sep2013 present

OBJECTIVES OF UNCTAD
–The primary objective of UNCTAD is to formulate policies relating to all aspects
of development including trade, aid, transport, finance and technology.
–To maximize the trade, investment and development opportunities of
developing countries
–To assist them in their efforts to integrate into the world economy on an
equitable basis.
–Focused on the key issues of: protectionism in developing countries and the
need for structural change, trade in commodities and manufactures aid and
international monetary reform, technology, shipping, and economic co-
operation among developing countries

Meeting & Membership
The firstUNCTAD conference took place inGenevain 1964, the secondin
New Delhi in 1968, the thirdinSantiagoin 1972, fourthinNairobiin 1976, the
fifthinManilain 1979, the sixthinBelgradein 1983,the eighthinCartagenain
1992, the ninth atJohannesburg(South Africa) in il) in 2004, the 1996, the
tenthinBangkok(Thailand) in 2000, the eleventh inSão Paulo(Brazseventh
in Geneva in 1987, the twelfthinAccrain 2008, the thirteenth inDoha(Qatar)
in 2012 and the fourteenth inNairobi(Kenya) in 2016.
Currently, as of may 2018, UNCTAD has 195 member states and is
headquartered inGeneva, Switzerland. UNCTAD has 400 staff .It is a member
of theUnited Nations Development Group.Thereare non-governmental
organizations participating in the activities of UNCTAD.

Why UNCTAD?
–ThecreationofUNCTADin1964wasbasedonconcernsofdeveloping
countriesovertheinternationalmarket,multi-nationalcorporations,and
greatdisparitybetweendevelopednationsanddevelopingnations.The
UnitedNationsConferenceonTradeandDevelopmentwasestablishedto
provideaforumwherethedevelopingcountriescoulddiscusstheproblems
relatingtotheireconomicdevelopment.Theorganisationgrewfromtheview
thatexistinginstitutionslikeGATT(nowreplacedbytheWorldTrade
Organization,WTO),theInternationalMonetaryFund(IMF),andWorld
Bankwerenotproperlyorganizedtohandletheparticularproblemsof
developingcountries.Later,inthe1970sand1980s,UNCTADwasclosely
associatedwiththeideaofaNewInternationalEconomicOrder(NIEO)

Functions of UNCTAD
–The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development was established to provide a
forum where the developing countries could discuss the problems relating to their economic
development.
–UNCTAD conducts technical cooperation programmes

such
asASYCUDA,DMFAS,EMPRETECandWAIPA.
–In addition, UNCTAD conducts certain technical cooperation in collaboration with theWorld
Trade Organizationthrough the joint International Trade Centre (ITC), a technical cooperation
agency targeting operational and enterprise-oriented aspects of trade development.
–UNCTAD hosts theIntergovernmental Working Group of Experts on International Standards of
Accounting and Reporting(ISAR).

Achievements of UNCTAD
OneoftheprincipalachievementsofUNCTAD(1964)hasbeentoconceive
andimplementtheGeneralisedSystemofPreferences(GSP).Itwasarguedin
UNCTADthattopromoteexportsofmanufacturedgoodsfromdeveloping
countries,itwouldbenecessarytoofferspecialtariffconcessionstosuch
exports.Acceptingthisargument,thedevelopedcountriesformulatedtheGSP
schemeunderwhichmanufacturers'exportsandimportofsomeagricultural
goodsfromthedevelopingcountriesenterduty-freeoratreducedratesinthe
developedcountries.Sinceimportsofsuchitemsfromotherdeveloped
countriesaresubjecttothenormalratesofduties,importsofthesameitems
fromdevelopingcountrieswouldenjoyacompetitiveadvantage.
UNCTAD is a founding member of the United NationsSustainable Stock Exchanges
(SSE) initiativealong with thePrinciples for Responsible Investment, theUnited
Nations Environment ProgrammeFinance Initiative (UNEP-FI), and theUN Global
Compact.
