98% of library funding relies on the political will of voters and politicians. This workshop delves into essential political advocacy theories with an emphasis on building political power and how to weld it. We'll take time to explore an array of effective tools, tactics, messages, and strategies used by some of the best community organizers, political action committees, and politicians. You'll be able to adapt these techniques to your library’s financial foundation.

MY OWNADVOCACYFAILURES
WHERE DOES LIBRARY FUNDING COME FROM?
“While the majority of residents of the United States have
visited their public library and have used its services, most
cannot describe how their library is funded.
*Yet, over 90% of funding for U.S. public library
operations comes from local tax receipts.*
State and federal taxes provide a relatively small portion of
public library operating funds in most states. Together, state
and federal funds accounted for approximately 10% of the
total annual operating budgets of U.S. public libraries in 2005,
down from 14% of operating budgets in 2000. Dependence
on the local purse for public library funding is high, and
increasing.”
–From Awareness to funding, 2008
WE NEED VOTER SUPPORT IF WE WANT LIBRARIESTO STAY OPEN.
LIBRARIES ARE NOT NEUTRAL
LIBRARIES ARE
POLITICAL
LIBRARIES ARE
NON-PARTISAN
WE NEED EXPERTS
LIBRARY SCHOOLS DON’T TEACH
ABOUT THE POLITICS OF FUNDINGLIBRARIES.
LIBRARY ASSOCIATIONS
DON’T TEACH THE
POLITICS OF FUNDINGLIBRARIES.
LIBRARY JOURNALS
DON’T WRITE ABOUT THE
POLITICS OF FUNDINGLIBRARIES.
Actions engaging a threshold of

the data
THIS DATA IS NOW FIVEYEARS OLD…
…AND IT IS WRONG
HOW DO WE IDENTIFY WHO WE DON’T KNOW?
BOOK BANS ARE WILDLY UNPOPULAR
•70% OF PARENTS DISAGREE WITH BANNING BOOKS
•THE MAJORITY OF BOOK BANS IN 2021/2022 CAME FROM JUST 11 PEOPLE
•WHEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY LESS THAN 1% OF PARENTS OPT THEIR CHILDREN OUT OF SCHOOL READING
OVERTON WINDOW
“EVERYBODY LOVES LIBRARIESBUT NOBODY CARES”

LIBRARY ORGS REFUSE TO RADICALIZE SUPPORTERS
WHAT ARE WE LEAVING OUT?
CTA OR WHAT DO THEY DO NEXT?
THIS IS WRONG
LET’S TALK ABOUT PETITIONS
SOLIDIFY SUPPORT WITH OPPORTUNITIES FOR DIRECT ENGAGEMENT
LET’S TALK
ABOUT
MONEY
FUNDRAISING MATTERS
FOUNDATION MONEY IS GONE
VENDOR MONEY IS GONE
THERE’S NO CSRMONEY
INDIVIDUAL DONORS AREN’T CULTIVATED
DONORS AREN’T THANKED
LIBRARYASSOCIATIONS
ARE BROKE
FRIENDS AND FOUNDATIONS ARE NICE, BUT THEY RARELY SPEND MONEYON POLITICS
LIBRARIES CAN’T SPEND GOVERNMENT MONEY
ON POLITICS
LIBRARY ORGS
CAN’T/WON’T SPEND MONEY
ON POLITICS

HOW TO WRITE FOR POLITICS
4THGRADE LEVEL,
PERSUASIVE
NOT ACADEMIC
NO ACRONYMS/INSIDER LANGUAGE
“TRUTHY”
LOTS OF WHITE SPACE
THINK ABOUT INFLUENTIAL LANGUAGE (“LOSE ACCESS” VS ”DENY”)
DO NOT VALIDATE THEIR POSITION OR MESSAGE
