Understanding SGRT: You’re Key to
Efficiency, Patient Comfort, and Staff
Satisfaction
Miranda Murray B.S. RT(T)
Senior Radiation Therapist
Knowing Vs. Understanding
Quote from Charles Kettering
“Knowing is not understanding.
There is a great difference
between knowing and
understanding: you can know a
lot about something and not really
understand it.”

KNOWING UNDERSTANDINGVs.
Knowing Vs. Understanding
•Knowing – You know how to use all the parts/sections independently.
•Basic functions will work, but once you encounter a problem you are lost.
•You have all the pieces but you can’t get them to fit together.
•Understanding – you know how to use all the parts/sections
independently BUT, you are also able to use all the system as a
whole. This allows for problem solving.
•The ability to understand what each function is capable of on its own allows
you to use them together to solve a problem.
•You have all the pieces and can get all the pieces fit together.
5
Knowing SGRT
•Can perform warm up task
•Can perform the basic functions of SGRT
•Can import and draw a standard ROI
•Can align a patient using SGRT
6
Understanding SGRT
•The ability to identify warmup trends and report to Physics
•The ability to make corrections and/or problem solve a ROI that is not giving desired results
•Able to identify possible set ups that could impede the SGRTs ability to monitor patients
•Can use ALL the features of SGRT in order to pinpoint the cause of a problem with patient setup or to increase efficiency of setup
•Understands the importance of lining up the patient as close to 0 as possible, and not just “in the green”
7
My First Experience with SGRT
8
•My teacher didn’t
understand
SGRT, they only
knew how to use
it.
•They were unable
to answer several
of my questions
that pertained to
the “why”.
•I was frustrated
and hated using
the system.
•I thought SGRT
was making my
job harder, more
complicated, and
longer for the
patients.
Once I had an Understanding of SGRT
•I realized that SGRT had the ability to make my job easier and was not
making it harder.
•I was able to see that we now had the ability to improve patients
setups, procedure and time.
•Ability to solve setup and Vsim complications.
•Checking a patients SSD’s was very efficient.
9
ROI’s
•One of the biggest pieces of using SGRT
•Can have the greatest impact on patient setup efficiency and accuracy
•A bad ROI can cause the therapist to get frustrated with SGRT
•Understanding how SGRT works allows for therapist to adjust and
modify ROI’s for each specific patient.

Postural Video
Postural Video is a great tool to help with patient setup.
It can be used as a second check, to fine tune a setup, or when
you are having difficulties with a setup.
15
Surface Deformation
Great feature to help with
setup if you understand how
to use. Surface Deformation
feature can give therapist
lots of information about a
patients setup.
•Shows current surface in
tolerance
•Average Displacement
•Blue if below .3cm
•Red if above .3cm
16
The Importance of an Employees Understanding
•Employees have the understanding to determine if there is a set up issue
or a change in patients body/contour
•Employees can edit a ROI as needed if the original ROI isn’t producing
desired results
•Employees understand and use ALL features of SGRT for set up
•Patient set up and treatment times decrease
•Employees have a smoother, more efficient work flow
•Employees realize that SGRT is a tool that can benefit them
•Employees are able to problem solve Bolus and/or abnormal treatment
device complication
Conclusion
•Efficiency is improved when employees understand how to use SGRT
and have gained the ability to problem solve by understanding the
“whys” in SGRT.
•Patient comfort increases with employee understanding due to
increased set up efficiency and decreased set up and treatment time.
•Staff Satisfaction improves when they understand why they are using
SGRT. Set ups become quicker and less complex with the help of
SGRT.
