the issue

Tutorial 3-Week 4

Agenda
•Group formation
•Activities
•Best and worst of teamworking
•About the problem
•About the solution
•Selection of industry projects (Qantas,
•Linkedin

Activity 1: Best and worst of teamworking
1.Individually take 5 minutes to write down
your best/ Worst group experiences.
•Try and identify why it went so well
2.Then, take 5 minutes share with the
person next to you what happened,
3.Now, we’ll chat through these as a class.

Some notes on teams
•Team work is a skill
•Like any relationship(s) – effective team work
takes mindfulness and care.
•Importance of reflecting on your own team
work skills.
•Requires flexibility
•Working in teams is something that all of you
will be doing throughout your careers.
•Its pivotal for you, to understand how you can
best operate in and contribute to a team.

Today’s activities
•When working on a project, the
temptation is to ‘get started’
•Your inclination is to get into your
groups and start working on ‘the
solution’
•BUT
•It is essential that you take the time to
•Read the brief,
•Listen to the client,
•Think about the features of the problem,
and the solution before you start thinking
about a solution.

An analogy
•Let’s say you are an artist
•You get approached by client and they
say “I need a piece of art for my house”
•You could just make them something…
•But to make sure your client is satisfied,
you need to know about the features of
the problem, and the solution
•What kind of art?
•What size?
•What do you want it to communicate
•When do you need it?
•etc

Activity 2: About the problem
Random groups
1.Introduce yourselves
2.‘About the problem’ brainstorming
•What do we know?
•What seems important?
•What data is a ‘must include’?
•What data is a ‘good to include’?
•What don’t we know about the problem?

Activity 3: About the solution
Random groups
1.Introduce yourselves
2.‘About the solution’ brainstorming
•What is the solution going to look like?
•What criteria does the solution have to meet?
•What features might a good solution have?
•What don’t we understand about the
solution?
•This activity is not about generating ideas
for potential solutions. We are talking
about/around the solution.
