CONSUMERISM
Consumercultureisasocialsysteminwhichconsumptionisdominatedby
theconsumptionofcommercialproducts(Arnould,2010).
Consumerismistheconsumptionofmaterialgoodsandservicesinexcess
ofone’sbasicneeds.
Consumerismiscloselyrelatedtomaterialism,andbothheavilyinfluence
thewayindividualsviewtheself.
Itcanbeviewedbothpositivelyandnegatively.Forexample,peopletend
tobehappierandmoremotivatedwhentheirwantsandneedsaremet.
Oncontrary,itencouragespeopletobuyproductsandservicesthatthey
donotreallyneedorafford.
Thestateofneedandwantstendtobeendless,andthuscouldcause
negativeeffectssuchasdissatisfaction,unhappiness,anddepression.
