Unemployment is a situation when an individual is able and willing to do work at the existing wage rate, but does not find any work .

Types of Unemployment Cyclical Unemployment Seasonal Unemployment Frictional Unemployment (Temporary Unemployment) Educated unemployment Technical Unemployment Structural Unemployment Disguised Unemployment

Cyclical Unemployment  Cyclical unemployment is the component of overall unemployment that results directly from cycles of economic upturn and downturn. Unemployment typically rises during recessions and declines during economic expansions.

Seasonal Unemployment Seasonal unemployment occurs when people are unemployed at particular times of the year when demand for labour is lower than usual. Seasonal unemployment refers to a temporary window of time where the number of available employment opportunities decreases.

Frictional Unemployment Frictional Unemployment refers to the unemployment caused due to trade or economic cycles such as recession and depression. Refers to temporary unemployment caused due to economic frictions such as power failures, breakdown of machinery, search periods, etc.

Educated Unemployment Educated unemployment arises when a large number of educated people are unemployed or unable to secure a job. There has been an alarming phase of mass unemployment among the educated youth.

Technical Unemployment Technological unemployment is a type unemployment which is caused by changes in the techniques of production such as use of computer, robotic technology etc.

Structural Unemployment Structural unemployment occurs when there are fundamental changes to the economy that change the demand of services. In these cases, people lose their jobs because they are simply no longer needed, mainly because of consumer preferences.

Disguised Unemployment The situation of underemployment is referred to as the situation when people are apparently working but all of them are made to work less than their potential is called disguised unemployment. In this case, the person considers himself employed but is actually not working.

Causes of Unemployment The Caste System: A Social Barrier to Employment. Inadequate Economic Growth. Increase in Population. Agriculture: A Seasonal Occupation. Loss of Small-Scale/Cottage Industries. Low Rates of Saving and Investment. Ineffective Economic Planning. Labour Immobility.
