PUBLIC HEALTH ADMINISTRATION

CONCEPT Public health is defined as the science of protecting the safety and improving the health of communities through education, policy making and research for disease and injury prevention. The field of public health administration concerns itself with the administration, leadership, and management of health care systems, such as hospitals, networks, and public health systems.

Why Public Health Administration? you can enter the health care industry in a variety of different settings. Whatever role you choose, you will have the ABILITY to drive positive change in the community that you serve. Working with federal, state, or local government agencies to drive new health care policies Working for NGOs and nonprofit organizations,

your studies will start to focus on three principal areas. These are: Studying the theory, concepts, and skills of management. These include areas, such as financial management, leadership, law, economics, quantitative methods, organizational behavior, and planning. Studying the health care industry itself. These include areas, such as health and human behavior, epidemiology, and medical care organizations. Applying and integrating all materials obtained during the study, showing a greater understanding of management concepts and how these apply to public health administration. This is usually done through an exam, paper, or major project.

Some of the most important challenges of strengthening public health systems are in governance and management. 

Definition A component of the field of public health. Concentrates on management of people & programs. On a day-to-day basis, administration is needed to ensure that organization operate efficiently & with success. PHA is a term used to encompass all the duties required in the management of facilities that provide health care services, such as hospitals, social services organizations and government agencies. Contd.. Public health administration deals with plan, policy & programs of public health including the management of personnel, finance & other related matters. Focused on disease prevention, health promotion of community people via. various programs – safe drinking water, MCH, occupational & environmental health, as well as the ongoing surveillance of health-related issues within the community. Finally, it is an organized attempt to improve the health of communities.  Policies are based on populations rather than individuals, and trends in health practices and conditions over a large community. Public Health Administrator Any personnel related to public health and having required qualification and experience in administration and management. The work of a public health administrator is at the same time similar to and different from that of persons engaged in administration in other fields. The administrative elements are similar, only the field & process is different. These include supervising employees, coordinating programs, preparing budgets, monitoring programs, and evaluating results and outcomes. PRATIK SHRESTHA - PHA-UNIT 1 8

Contd… Public health administrators are concerned with health and disease prevention programs. The day-to-day activities of a public health administrator include HRM; finance; performance measurement and improvement; communications and marketing; and maintaining relations with members of the media and local government. A public health administrator must build relationships with such various constituencies as consumer groups, health providers and legislators. Education and Training The actual field of study can vary but an undergraduate degree in management, nursing, public health, community health, applied health, allied health or a related discipline is useful. An optimal undergraduate curriculum should include course work in the following subject areas: management, accounting, finance, economics, biology, env. health, business, health law, and budgeting.
