Learning Objectives Form and use comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs correctly. Express equality and inequality using as…as and the same…as . Avoid common grammatical errors in comparison.
Review – Adjectives and Adverbs Adjectives describe nouns: big, smart, beautiful . Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs: quickly, more carefully, best .
Comparative Forms – Structure 1. Short Adjectives (one syllable): Add -er + than e.g. : tall → taller than , fast → faster than 2. Two-syllable adjectives ending in -y : Change y to i + -er e.g. : happy → happier than 3. Long Adjectives (2+ syllables): Use more/less + adjective + than e.g. : more beautiful than , less expensive than Adverbs: - Short adverbs : run faster than - Long adverbs : more carefully than
Comparatives – Use We use comparatives to show difference or change between two people, things, or situations. Examples: - This class is more interesting than the previous one. He drives faster than his brother. My phone is less expensive than yours .
Superlative Forms – Structure 1. Short adjectives: add - est e.g. : tall → tallest , fast → fastest 2. Adjectives ending in -y: change y → i + est e.g. : happy → happiest 3. Long adjectives: use the most / the least + adjective e.g. : the most beautiful , the least expensive Adverbs: - Short adverbs : run fastest - Long adverbs: the most carefully
Superlatives – Use Superlatives compare three or more things , showing the highest or lowest degree . Examples: Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world . She is the most talented student in the class . This is the least expensive restaurant in town .
Common Irregular Comparatives & Superlatives .
As…As and The Same…As . 1. As…As – Equality: Subject + verb + as + adjective/adverb + as + noun/pronoun Examples: - Sara is as tall as her sister . - He runs as fast as a cheetah . 2. Not as…as – Inequality: - This exam is not as difficult as the last one . 3. The same…as: - My bag is the same color as yours .
Common Errors ❌ She is more taller than me. → ✅ She is taller than me. ❌ He runs the most fastest. → ✅ He runs the fastest. ❌ I am not same as you . → ✅ I am not the same as you
