Unit Title: In the Dark
Essential Question: How do you know
what to do when there are no
instructions?
Genre Focus: Informational

Darkness is associated with the unknown and the unknowable.
It can be real, like an unexplored cave, or something like the
unknown events that the future may bring. Darkness inspires
fear and encourages uncertainty, yet some people find it safer
to remain there. They would rather be “in the dark” than to take
steps to try and “see the light.”
Is darkness a place to live in, run from, or explore? What
qualities does a person need in order to“face the darkness”?
How does facing the darkness affect or change a person? How
does one finally decide to take actionin the face of uncertainty?

How do you know what to do when there are no instructions?
Possible answers:
"I ask a trusted parent, teacher, or adult for help.“
"I look around for clues or information that might help me figure it out.“
"I ask a reliable friend or classmate who might know what to do.“
"I think about similar situations I've experienced and apply what I
learned.“
"I take a deep breath and try to work through the problem step by step.“
"I observe what others around me are doing and learn from them.“
"I follow my common sense to make a careful and safe decision.“
"I wait and ask for instructions later if it’s not urgent."

Shakespeare in Harlem

The Harlem Renaissance was a period of timein
the early 1900s when African-American music,
literature, and art flourished. This cultural
movement had an impact on the rights of
African-Americans such as Langston Hughes.

Langston Hughes (1902–1967) was an influential African-American poet,
playwright, novelist, and social activist. Born in Joplin, Missouri(a state in
the Midwestern region of the United States), he became a key figure in the
Harlem Renaissance, a cultural movement celebrating African-American art,
literature, and music. Hughes is best known for his poetry that captures the
struggles, joys, and resilience of Black life in America.
Through his writing, Hughes gave a powerful voice to the African-American
experience and addressed themes of racial identity, social justice, and
equality.

Paraphrase the quote by
Langston Hughes. Make
connections to personal
experiences and express
your level of agreement/
disagreement with the
quote.

The quote by Langston Hughes can be paraphrased as:
"Cherish your dreams, because without them, life becomes limited and
incomplete, like a bird that has lost its ability to soar.“
Connecting this to personal experiences, I believe dreams give life purpose
and direction.
For example, when I was pursuing my teaching career, holding onto the
dream of making a meaningful difference in students' lives helped me
overcome challenges and stay motivated. Dreams are like a compass; they
guide us toward what truly matters. I wholeheartedly agree with the
quote. Dreams inspire growth and provide hope, and without them, life
can feel stagnant and unfulfilling. Do you connect with the idea of dreams
being essential to achieving a fulfilling life? Let me know your thoughts!

"I agree with the quote because dreams are really
important. For example, I dream of becoming a
doctor someday. When I think about my dream, it
makes me work harder in school and feel excited
about the future. If I didn’t have dreams, I might not
try as much, and life would feel boring, like the bird
in the quote that can’t fly."

William Shakespeare (1564–1616) is
widely regarded as one of the greatest
writers in the English language and the
world’s most influential playwright. Born
in England, Shakespeare wrote 39 plays,
154 sonnets, and two long narrative
poems. His works explore universal
themes such as love, power, jealousy,
betrayal, and ambition. He significantly
shaped the development of English
literature and drama. Some of his most
notable plays include Romeo and Juliet,
Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and
A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Shakespeare's works are divided into
comedies, tragedies, and histories,
