•Thisdemandalsoincreasesduringtimesofnaturalcalamities

Granaries:builtandfoodwasrationalizedbypeopletoovercome
thisproblemoverhundredofyears.
•Post-WorldWarII:theworldsawneedforformationofan
organizationtomangethefoodcrisis.
•FoodandAgricultureOrganization(FAO):introducedyear1945.
•In1974, theWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)oftheUnited
Nation(UN)alongwithFAOhadaworldfoodsummitduetothe
globalfoodcrisistofinallytakechargeinmanagingthecrisisand
theconceptof“foodsecurity”wasbroughtforth.

FOOD SECURITY -Definition
•FirstSummit(1945):FAO&WHOfocusedmainlyonincreasing
volumeoffoodavailableandkeepingitstableandsodefinedit
as:
•“Availabilityatalltimesofadequateworldfoodsuppliesofbasic
foodstuffstosustainasteadyexpansionoffoodconsumptionandto
offsetfluctuationsinproductionandprices. ”(UnitedNation,1975)
•YearspassedbyandtheFAO&WHOsawthatfoodsecurityhad
tobefocusedalsoonmeetingthedietaryneedsofpeople
comingfromeverybackgroundmaytheyberichorpoverty
stricken.

FOOD SECURITY -Definition
•2001:WHOandFAOdefinetheconceptproperlyas:
•“FoodSecurityisasituationthatexistswhenallpeople,atalltimes,
havephysical,social,andeconomicaccesstosufficient,safe,
nutritiousfoodthatmeetstheirdietaryneedsandfoodpreferences
foranactiveandhealthylife.”(TheStateofFoodInsecurityinthe
World,2001).

•FoodSecurityisacomplexsustainabledevelopmentissue,
linkedtohealththroughmalnutrition,butalsotosustainable
economicdevelopment,environment,andtrade.
•Thiscouldalsohelptheworldprepareforfuture
consumptionneedsthatwillariseduetoeveryincreasing
population.
