UNIT – 5 System Unit 2

What is System Unit ? The  system unit , also known as a "tower" or "chassis," is the main part of a desktop computer. It includes the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and other components. ... The term " system unit " is often used to differentiate between the computer and peripheral devices, such as the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. 3

Desktop computer A  desktop computer  is a personal computer designed for regular use at a single location on or near a desk or table due to its size and power requirements . The most common configuration has a case that houses the power supply,  motherboard  (a printed circuit board with a micro processor as the central processing unit (CPU), memory, bus, and other electronic components), disk storage (usually one or more  hard disk drives , solid state drives, optical disk drives, and in early models a floppy disk drives); a keyboard and mouse for input; and a computer monitor, speakers, and, often, a printer for output. The case may be oriented horizontally or vertically and placed either underneath, beside, or on top of a desk. 4

Laptop computer A  laptop  is a personal computer that is small enough to sit in a person's lap, and is designed for mobile  uses . Also called notebooks,  laptops  are smaller, thinner and lighter than most desktop PCs, and as of 2011, many  laptops  included powerful capabilities that rivaled desktops. 5 Two in one Laptops - S imply 2-in-1, is a portable computer that has features of both tablets and laptops. ... 2-in-1 PCs consist of portable computer components within light and thin chassis, and exemplify technological convergence. Gamming Laptops - A gaming computer, also known as a gaming PC or gaming rig, is a personal computer designed for playing video games that require a high amount of computing power. Ultra books- Ultrabook  is an Intel specification and trademark for a line of high-end subnotebook computers featuring reduced bulk without compromising battery life. Ultrabooks use low power  intel core processors, solid state drives, and a  unibody chasis .

Tablet A tablet computer, commonly shortened to tablet, is a mobile device, typically with a mobile operating system and touchscreen display processing circuitry, and a rechargeable battery in a single, thin and flat package. 6 No keyboard and mouse. Low processor speeds for work. ... Less portable than a mobile phone. Tablets tend to lack ports. ... They can be fragile. ... They can cause ergonomic discomfort. 1. They're so light and portable.  You can get connectivity anywhere. A tablet is more affordable than a laptop. Tablets 'wake up' instantly. They make excellent portable entertainment systems. They're great for web browsing. They're handy for giving presentations.  You can give one to your kids. Disadvantages Advantages

Smartphones a mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded apps. 7 Wearable Computers A wearable computer, also known as a wearable or body-borne computer, is a small computing device worn on the body. The definition of 'wearable computer' may be narrow or broad, extending to smartphones or even ordinary wristwatches.

Component 8 Personal computers come in different sizes, shapes, and capabilities. So they look different and they have different features Desktop Smartphone Tablet Wearable Laptop

Concept Check 9 What is system unit ? Describe and compare the five most common types of personal computers. What are tower units ? What is an all in one ? What is a mini tablet ?

SYSTEM BOARD Sockets A  socket  is the array of pins and the securing mechanism that hold a processor in place and connect the motherboard to the available processing power. There are different  sockets  depending on what generation CPU is supported. In a computer system, a chipset is a set of electronic components in an integrated circuit known as a "Data Flow Management System" that manages the data flow between the  processor ,  memory  and peripherals. It is usually found on the motherboard. The  system board  is also called the motherboard, main-board, planar board, or logic board., A motherboard is the main printed circuit board found in general purpose computers and other expandable systems. It holds, and allows, communication between many of the crucial electronic components of a system, such as the central processing unit and memory, and provides connectors for other peripherals.  11

12 Slots An  expansion slot  refers to any of the  slots  on a motherboard that can hold an  expansion  card to expand the computer's functionality, like a video card, network card, or sound card. The  expansion  card is plugged directly into the  expansion  port so that the motherboard has direct access to the hardware. Bus Lines A  bus line  is a subsystem used to transfer data between the insides of a  computer  or between multiple computers. ... An internal  bus  connects the inside of the  computer  such as the  CPU  and memory to its motherboard. Internal  buses  can be referred to as local  buses  since they connect to local devices.

Concept Check 13 What is system board, and what does it do ? Define and describe sockets, slots, and bus lines. What are chips ? How are chips attached to the system board ?

Microprocessor Chips Microprocessor chips (MPU) are silicon devices that serve as the central processing unit (CPU) in computers. They contain thousands of electronic components and use a collection of machine instructions to perform mathematical operations and move data from one memory location to another. Microprocessor Speciality Processor Specialty Processors on the Mainframe. ... The basic idea of a specialty processor, is that it sits alongside the main CPUs and specific types of "special" workload is shuttled to the specialty processor to be run there, instead of on the primary CPU complex 14 A microprocessor is an electronic component that is used by a computer to do its work. It is a central processing unit on a single integrated circuit chip containing millions of very small components including transistors, resistors, and diodes that work together.

Concept Check 15 Name and describe the two components of microprocessors ? Define word, clock speed, multicore chip, and parallel processing. What are specialty processors ? Describe coprocessors ?

Memory RAM RAM (Random Access Memory) is the hardware in a computing device where the operating system (OS), application programs and data in current use are kept so they can be quickly reached by the device's processor. In computing, memory refers to a device that is used to store information for immediate use in a computer or related computer hardware device. It typically refers to semiconductor memory, specifically metal–oxide–semiconductor memory, where data is stored within MOS memory cells on a silicon integrated circuit chip 16 ROM ROM stands for read-only memory. It's used to store the start-up instructions for a computer, also known as the firmware. Most modern computers use flash-based ROM. It is part of the BIOS chip, which is located on the motherboard Flash Memory Flash memory is an electronic non-volatile computer memory storage medium that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. The two main types of flash memory are named after the NAND and NOR logic gates.

Concept Check 17 What is memory ? Name and describe its three types. What are cache memory, DIMM, and virtual memory ? Define ROM and flash memory.

Expansion Slots and Cards Graphic Cards A Graphics Card is a piece of computer hardware that produces the image you see on a monitor. The Graphics Card is responsible for rendering an image to your monitor, it does this by converting data into a signal your monitor can understand . An expansion slot refers to any of the slots on a motherboard that can hold an expansion card to expand the computer's functionality, like a video card, network card, or sound card. The expansion card is plugged directly into the expansion port so that the motherboard has direct access to the hardware 18 Network Interface cards (NIC) A network interface controller is a computer hardware component that connects a computer to a computer network. Early network interface controllers were commonly implemented on expansion cards that plugged into a computer bus. Wireless Network A wireless network is a computer network that uses wireless data connections between network nodes. Wireless networking is a method by which homes, telecommunications networks and business installations

Concept Check 19 What are expansion slots and cards ? What are they used for ? List and describe three commonly used expansion cards. What are SD cards ? How are they used ?
