M-1 “ INTRODUCTION TO VALUE
EDUCATION ”
•CONCEPT OF VALUES
❖ The regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of
something.
VALUE= Moral ideas + General conceptions or Orientations towards the world.
VALUE= Interests + Attitudes + Preferences + Needs + Sentiments +
Dispositions.
“ Values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work.”
M-1 “ INTRODUCTION TO VALUE
EDUCATION ”
• CHARACTERISTICS OF VALUES
•Values are loaded with effective thoughts about ideas, objects, behavior, etc.
•They contain a judgmental element in that they carry an individual’s ideas as to
what is right, good, or desirable.
•These are extremely practical, and valuation requires not just techniques but also an
understanding of the strategic context.
•These can provide standards of competence and morality.
•These can go beyond specific situations or persons.
M-1 “ INTRODUCTION TO VALUE
EDUCATION ”
•Values and morals can not only guide but inspire and motivate a person, give
energy and a zest for living and for doing something meaningful.
•It contains interpretations of right or wrong.
•These influence attitudes and behavior.
•It implies that certain behaviors on outcomes are preferred over others.
•These allow the members of an organization to interact harmoniously. These make
it easier to reach goals that would be impossible to achieve individually.
M-1 “ INTRODUCTION TO VALUE
EDUCATION ”
Sociologists use this term in a more precise sense to mean “the generalised end
which has the connotations of rightness, goodness or inherent desirability”.
Values exist, whether you recognize them or not. Life can be much easier when you
acknowledge your values – and when you make plans and decisions that honor
them.
When the things that you do and the way you behave match your values, life is
usually good – you're satisfied and content.

M-1 “ INTRODUCTION TO VALUE
EDUCATION ”
❖Why is the process so hard? When there is no other way to learn apart from following a
process, why do many of us want to take short cuts only to suffer or fail later?
❖If everyone knew the best ways to live life — read the right books and given all the
wisdom — then would we all do the best we can?
Why can we never forgive some people even though we know that by thinking about how
they hurt us we will only harm ourselves? Wouldn’t it be easier if we just let go?
M-1 “ INTRODUCTION TO VALUE
EDUCATION ”
CONCLUSION –
Values are socially approved desires & goals that are internalized through the process
of conditioning , learning or socialization & that become subjective preferences ,
standards & aspirations.
“Try not to become a man of success. Rather
become a man of value.”
