Unseen Prose 2021 Feedback
Based on this: Other than gender what is ‘opposing’ about Wilcox and Robyn in the set up?????? HOW COULD WE HAVE SEEN THIS?
OVERALL TARGETS BEFORE WE LOOK BACK 1. Oversimplification for those achieving lower than 15. 2. Close analysis of the text should then allow for wider context to be brought in. Context without analysis is add on rather than argument. 3. AO2 analysis needs to be more closely focussed at word and sentence level in a way that it isn’t in our whole text study. 3. Journey/destination of text allows for better understanding of the whole and analysis of structure. 4. Misogyny vs Sexism
1. It starts with Wilcox speaking – it is his domain and his attitude toward her and the scheme is poor. ‘sourly’ TO MAKE 1. WORTHWHILE LOOK FOR WHY THAT IS IN THE TEXT. 2. His own experience of academia ‘toffee nosed southerner’ – opposing ideas – opposing ideas across class and country divides Southern = more privileged background
Starting with the text and then bringing in context
Half way point in the extract – Robyn’s viewpoint unsettles Wilcox. He has heard what she says – her idealism is a concept he hasn’t encountered before. Ideas about the role of work – her own naivety.
Although they apparently have completely opposing world views. Wilcox’s forthright ‘there will never be room for you no matter how much better than’ is a concern of Robyn’s but her idealism won’t allow her to pursue this – they can both gain from one another. Her later defiance shows she is unwilling. The Band 5 considerations.
The journey of the text – what is the destination? He “scuttled itnto the Directors’ lavatory into a place of sanctuary, The humour at how he is able to escape her in a men only space. He starts off in control but he must retreat at the end. “A tall trendy leftist feminist lecturer”. The repetition and addition of tall reflects that he does feel threatened – but it is also comical.
