Saat ini diketahui tidak kurang dari 16 marga (genus), 38 jenis (species) dan 189 anak jenis (sub-species) rusa dengan sebaran aslinya yang tersebar di seluruh dunia, mulai dari daerah yang beriklim dingin di dataran Eropa, hingga ke daerah sub-tropis dan tropis di dataran Asia.Rusa sambar atau dalam bahasa ilmiah (latin) disebut Cervus unicolor menjadi rusa paling besar diantara 3 rusa asli Indonesia lainnya seperti rusa timor (Cervus timorensis), rusa bawean (Axis kuhlii), dan kijang (Muntiacus muntjak).Rusa sambar terdiri sedikitnya 13 subspesies. Subspesies rusa sambar yang asli berasal dari Indonesia dan menjadi rusa terbesar di Indonesia adalah Cervus unicolor equinus. Supspesies ini selain terdapat di Indonesia (Sumatera dan Kalimantan) terdapat juga di semenanjung Malaysia dan Thailand.
