उपधातु Derivation : उपमिति धातुभि : इति उपधातु : | (शब्दस्तोम महा नि धी : ) That which are not though Dhatu , but similar or identical like nature to Dhatu , are spoken as Upadhatu . ( उपधातु ) गतिविवर्जिताः (चक्रपाणिःच.चि.१५ / १७) That means the substances which are not subjected to any transformation are called Upadhatu .
Definition : ते च स्तन्यादयो धात्वन्तरापोषणाच्छरीरपोषका अप्युपधातुशब्देनोच्यन्ते (चक्रपाणिःच.चि.१५ / १७) That structural substances which are supporting the body but do not nourish it (the body) are called as Upadhatu . धातुभ्यश्चोपजायन्ते तस्मात्त उपधातवः” इति| (चक्रपाणिःच.चि.१५ / १८) This upadhatus are formed after the formation of saptadhatu , i.e. why they are called as upadhatus .
रसात् स्तन्यं ततो [ १ ] रक्तमसृजः कण्डराः सिराः| मांसाद्वसा त्वचः षट् च मेदसः स्नायुसम्भवः|| ( च.चि.१५ / १६) 1) Upadhatu of Rasa dhatu are : a) Stanya , b) Aratava 2) Upadhatu of Raktadhatu are : a) Sira , b) Kandaras 3) Upadhatu of Mamsadhatu are : a) Vasa , b) Tvacha 4) Upadhatu of Medadhatu are : a) Snayu Asthi , Majja and ShukraDhatu are not having Upadhatus .
Nourishment : रसात् स्तन्यं ततो रक्तमसृजः कण्डराः सिराः| मांसाद्वसा त्वचः षट् च मेदसः स्नायुसम्भवः || ( च.चि.१५ / १६) Nourishment of Upadhatu takes place from its respective Dhatu from which it is originated from Prasada bhaga . As per Charaka , Stanya and Artava are formed out of Rasa ; Kandara and Sira are formed out of Rakta ; Vasa and Shat Tvacha are formed out of Mamsa and Snayu are formed out of Medo Dhatu .
STANYA Definition /location : रसप्रसादो मधुरः पक्वाहारनिमित्तजः | कृत्स्नदेहात् स्तनौ प्राप्तः स्तन्यमित्यभिधीयते || (सु . नि . १०/१८) As per Sushruta , Stanya is formed from Ahara Rasa and it is present in whole body. Sushruta said that the sweet essence of Rasa produced by digested food and having reaches the breast from the entire body is known as Stanya .
B reast milk in woman produced by the essence of food is impelled like Shukra by touching, seeing, remembering and embarking of the progeny. Hence constant affection is the cause of secretion. The factors which influence the secretion of milk, 1.Apatya Sparshana – Holding the baby in arms. 2.Apatya Darshana – Seeing the baby 3.Apatya Smarana – Thinking of her baby 4.Nirantara Sneha – Deep affection towards her baby Utpatti : रसात् स्तन्यं प्रसादजं (च.चि.१५/१६) Utpatti of Stanya takes place by the Rasa dhatu .
Properties : ( Shuddh Stanya Lakshana ) यत् क्षीरमुदके क्षिप्तमेकीभवति पाण्डुरम् | मधुरं चाविवर्णं च प्रसन्नं तद्विनिर्दिशेत् || (सु . नि .10/25) The pure milk has got sweet taste and whitish in colour , when a drop of milk put in water it immediately mix up with water but if it is not pure it will not mix with water or just floats on the water surface or makes layers.
Function : जीवनं बृंहणं सात्म्यं स्नेहनं मानुषं पयः| नावनं रक्तपित्ते च तर्पणं चाक्षिशूलिनाम्|| (च.स . २७/२२४) The human milk is vitalizing, nourishing and wholesome, increases suppleness, is useful as a nasal medication in Raktapitta (bleeding disorders) and is also soothing to persons having pain in eyes.
Quantity : As per Charaka and Laghu Vagbhata the quantity of Stanya in human body is of 02 Anjali . (अ.ह.शा.३/८१) Method of Assessing Suddha and Dushita Stanya : Suddha Stanya : यत् क्षीरमुदके क्षिप्तमेकीभवति पाण्डुरम् | मधुरं चाविवर्णं च प्रसन्नं तद्विनिर्दिशेत् || (सु . नि .10/25)
तत्त्वनेकौषधिरसप्रसादं प्राणदं गुरु | मधुरं पिच्छिलं शीतं स्निग्धं श्लक्ष्णं सरं मृदु | सर्वप्राणभृतां तस्मात् सात्म्यं क्षीरमिहोच्यते || ( सु . सू .45/48) Milk which is obtained from cow, goat, camel, ewe, buffalo, mare, woman and elephant is the essence of the juice of many plants, heavy, Sweet, slimy, cold, unctuous, smooth, moving and soft and such as milk is said as suitable for all living beings.
नार्यास्तु मधुरं स्तन्यं कषायानुरसं हिमम् | नस्याश्च्योतनयोः पथ्यं जीवनं लघु दीपनम्|| Sushruta said that woman’s breast milk is sweet, slightly astringent, cold, light, promotes life and digestion and is wholesome as snuffing and eye drop. Asuddha Stanya : अनिष्टगन्धमम्लं च विवर्णं विरसं च यत् | वर्ज्यं सलवणं क्षीरं यच्च विग्रथितं भवेत् ||
I) Vata Dushit Stanya : वाताद्दुष्टं तु प्लवतेऽम्भसि | कषायं फेनिलं रूक्षं वर्चोमूत्रविबन्धकृत् || (अ.ह्र.उ.२/२-४) Stanya vitiated by Vata , floats on water, is astringent, frothy, dry and causes obstruction to the faeces and urine.
II) Pitta Dushit Stanya : पित्तादुष्णाम्लकटुकं पीतराज्यप्सु दाहकृत्|| (अ.ह्र.उ.२/२-४) Stanya vitiated by Pitta , is hot, sour, pungent, produced yellow coloured lines in water and gives rise to burning sensation (in the alimentary tract of the child.)
III) Kapha Dushit Stanya : कफात्सलवणं सान्द्रं जले मज्जति पिच्छिलम् | (अ.ह्र.उ.२/२-४) Stanya vitiated by Kapha , is slightly salty, thick, sinks in water and slimy.
Stanya Vriddhi Laxana : स्तन्यं स्तनयोरापीनत्वं मुहुर्मुहुः प्रवृत्तिं तोदं च; (स.ुस.ू१५/१६) Due to the increase of Stanya more then it’s normal quantity, breast are enlarged, secretion of milk occures often and often along with pain in the breast. And develops excessive desire to feed the baby.
Stanya Kshaya Laxana : स्तनक्षये स्तनयोर्म्लानता स्तन्यासम्भवोऽल्पता वा; तत्र श्लेष्मवर्धनद्रव्योपयोगः | (स.स.१५/१२) Due to the decrease of Stanya becomes flaccid, secretion of milk is reduced and some time totally absent.
Chikitsha of Dushit Stanya : The drugs which purify the breast milk are called Stanya-sodhaka Dravya . Ex. Shunthi , Devadaru , Musta , Guduchi , Sariva etc. The substances which increases the breast milk are called as Stanya Vardhaka Dravyas . Ex. Shatavari , Vidari , Kushmanda , Trinapanchamula , Shatika dhanya etc.
