UROMYCES (genus of rust fungi under family Pucciniaceae) Submitted By: Binita Suwal Submitted to: Rajan Poudel (Department of Plant Pathology)

SYSTEMIC POSITION AND CLASSIFICATION Kingdom : Fungi Division : Basidiomycetes Class : Pucciniomycetes Order : Pucciniales Family : Pucciniaceae Genus : Uromyces Some of the species in the genus Uromyces are: Uromyces apiosporus , Uromyces elegans , Uromyces appendiculatus , Uromyces trifolii , Uromyces pisi , Uromyces graminae Uromyces ciceris-arietini , Uromyces fabae Uromyces appendiculatus in beans

CHARACTERISTICS OF GENUS UROMYCES Second largest rust fungi genus with about 600 species Some of the species may be microcyclic ( U. ficariae), or macrocyclic ( U. fabae, U. dactylidis, U. appendiculatus ) that means having all the five spores (teliospore, basidiospore, spermatia, aeciospore and urediospore). Mycelium: well developed, septate, May be heterocious or autocious. Puccinia and Uromyces can be distinguished based on the number of the teliospore cell but not by morphology of their spermogonia, aecia or uredinia. Puccinia contain two celled teliospore while Uromyces contain one celled teliospore (dark and stalked). Reproduction: sexual reproduction, asexual reproduction (by spores)

Major Disease caused by Uromyces Fungus Disease Uromyces appendiculatus Bean rust Uromyces ciceris-arietini Chickpea rust Uromyces pisi ( heterocious) Pea rust, aecial stage occur in Euphorbia Uromyces fabae Pea rust, Vicia rust, lentil rust Uromyces dianthi Carnation rust The members mostly cause rust disease in leguminous plants

Symptoms 1. Appearance of small yellow or white spots. 2. Development of rust-colored pustule. 5. Development of black teliospore 4. Severe infections result in premature leaf drop 3. Pustule may also be surrounded with a yellow halo.
