What's laser ?
Laser is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplication based on the
stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation . The word " laser " is an acronym for " light
amplication by stimulated emission of radiation "
Uses of laser
Laser have many uses and here are ten of them.

1- Medicine : including laser surgery as eye surgery and kindey stone treatment , cosmetic skin
treatment such as acne treatment, tato remover and hair removal.

2- Laser photogrammetry : It's a method to measure large animals underwater without having to
physically take them out of water or hold a long rope .

3- Entertainment : Laser light is useful in entertainment because the coherent nature of laser light
allows a narrow beam to be produced, which allows the use of optical scanning to draw patterns or
images on walls , A laser light show projector is a device that is built with a bunch of small components

that when put together, can be used to project and manipulate laser light in fun and artistic ways such
as in parties , concrete and TV shows.

4- Material processing : Laser Material Processing uses laser energy to modify the shape or appearance
of a material. This method of material modification provides a number of advantages such as the ability
to quickly change designs, produce products without the need for retooling, and improve the quality of
finished products.

5- Military : It is including applications such as target designation and ranging, defensive
countermeasures, communications and directed energy weapons.

6- Fiber optic cable : Fiber optic cables are a major mode of communication partly because multiple
signals can be sent with high quality and low loss by light propagating along the fibers. The light signals

can be modulated with the information to be sent by either light emitting diodes or lasers. The lasers
have significant advantages because they are more nearly monochromatic and this allows the pulse
shape to be maintained better over long distances.

7- Optical disc drive : is a disc drive that uses laser light or electromagnetic waves within or near the
visible light spectrum as part of the process of reading or writing data to or from optical discs. A laser is
used to transfer digital data (a long sequence of ones and zeros) to this disc by literally burning small
‘pits’ into the surface, with untouched areas (called ‘lands’) representing ones and burned areas
representing zeros. This microscopic process happens around and around the disc in a long spiral .
A completed master can then be used to print out a massive number of all plastic discs, which each
receive a thin layer of aluminum (to reflect light), protective coatings, and finally the top label.

9- Barcode scanner : Supermarket scanners typically use helium-neon lasers to scan the universal
barxodes to indentify products. The laser beam bounces off a rotating mirror and scans the
code, sending a modulated beam to a light detector and then to a computer which has the
product information stored.

10- Laser printer : Laser printing is an electrostatic digital printing process. It produces high-quality text
and graphics by repeatedly passing a laser beam back and forth over a negatively-charged cylinder called
a "drum" to define a differentially-charged image.
