PRONOUNS These are group of words that replaces a noun in a sentence to avoid unnecessary repetition of noun.

E xample A woman knocked at the door of the house. The housewife did not let her in. (Who is referred to by her in the second sentence?)

The Master told the housewife, "Three times I came, but you rejected me. " (Who is referred to by the words I, you, and me in the sentence?)

MOST COMMON PRONOUNS ARE : he, she, you, they, it, we e , she, Personal pronoun them, him, her, me, who

Examples : Robert saw the appointment today. He got an early promotion Robert and Karla did a wonderful job in their last project. They will be given a salary next month. Robert, Karla and I worked for a month to seal the deal. We want this project to succeed.

Examples : Hazel wants to become a TV personality. She always attends acting and modeling workshop to develop her skills. The school is the place where we start to dream. It helps us make our dreams come true.

To make your sentences clear, you must use the correct pronouns for the antecedent s that you are referring to. Other pronouns such as anyone, anything, everyone, few, each, many, some, somebody. One, or nobody do not have definite antecedents. They do not refer to certain persons or things. These are called indefinite pronouns.

Many of the words that may be used as determiners of nouns may also be used as pronouns . Remember, when these words modify the nouns, they are called determiners. When they are used alone in place of nouns, they are called pronouns.

These mangoes are very sweet. (These is a determiner) .( It modifies mangoes .)

These are mine. (These is a pronoun.)

Using the Pronouns Correctly . Identify the antecedents of the pronouns. Write them on the on blanks provided. If there is no particular antecedent, write indefinite on the blank.

Compound words may be used as verbs, nouns, or adjectives. Study the following examples. 1 . We belong to a close-knit family. ( Close-knit is an adjective. It modifies the word family.) 2 . Darius is our class president . (Class president is a noun referring to Darius.)
