3. The following factors should be considered when choosing the type of cable for your network: Size   - How many nodes (computers) and what are the total distances between them? Cost   - What is the budget and how much can be spent on cabling? Reliability   - How dependent are your organization’s operations on the network? Speed  - How many concurrent users are there be and how critical is response time? Security  - How important is it to protect data from possible interception? Growth  - What are the organization’s plans for growth?   Administration  - How will the network be administered? Electrical Interference  - What is the physical environment in which the network will operate? Existing Cable  - Are there conduits or cabling already in place that might be useable (e.g., data grade phone lines for UTP)?

4. Twisted Pair A type of cable that consists of two independently insulated wires twisted around one another. The use of two wires twisted together helps to reduce crosstalk and electromagnetic induction. Twisted pair looks like telephone wire and consists of insulated strands of copper wire twisted together.

5. Twisted Pair There are two versions of twisted pair cable: Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP).  STP  is commonly used in Token Ring networks and  UTP  in Ethernet networks where it is referred to as "10baseT .“   Transmission rates vary between 10-100 Mbps..

8. UTP Short for  unshielded twisted pair ,  a popular type of cable that consists of two unshielded wires twisted around each other. Due to its low cost, UTP cabling is used extensively for  local-area networks (LANs) and telephone connections . UTP cabling does not offer as high bandwidth  or as good protection from interference as coaxial or fiber optic cables. B ut it is less expensive and easier to work with.

10. STP STP short for shielded twisted pair , a type of copper telephone wiring in which each of the two copper wires that are twisted together are coated with an insulating coating that functions as a ground for the wires. The extra covering in shielded twisted pair wiring protects the transmission line from electromagnetic interference leaking into or out of the cable. STP cabling often is used in Ethernet  networks , especially fast data rate Ethernets.

11. What are the characteristics of shielded twisted pair (STP)? Shielded twisted pair (STP)  is similar to UTP except it contains a copper braid jacket to ‘shield’ the wires from electrical interference. It can support transmissions over greater distances than UTP.

12. UTP Categories CAT1 is typically telephone wire. This type of wire is not capable of supporting computer network traffic and is not twisted . It is also used by phone companies who provide ISDN, where the wiring between the customer's site and the phone company's network uses CAT 1 cable. CAT2, CAT3, CAT4, CAT5 and CAT6 are network wire specifications. This type of wire can support computer network and telephone traffic. CAT2 is used mostly for token ring networks, supporting speeds up to 4 Mbps. For higher network speeds (100Mbps plus) you must use CAT5 wire, but for 10Mbps CAT3 will suffice.

13. UTP Categories CAT3, CAT4 and CAT5 cable are actually 4 pairs of twisted copper wires and CAT5 has more twists per inch than CAT3 therefore can run at higher speeds and greater lengths. The "twist" effect of each pair in the cables will cause any interference presented/picked up on one cable to be cancelled out by the cable's partner which twists around the initial cable. CAT3 and CAT4 are both used for Token Ring and have a maximum length of 100 meters. CAT6 wire was originally designed to support gigabit Ethernet (although there are standards that will allow gigabit transmission over CAT5 wire, that's CAT 5e). It is similar to CAT5 wire, but contains a physical separator between the 4 pairs to further reduce electromagnetic interference.

14. EIA Cable Connectors UTP uses a connection called the  RJ-45 connector . It looks similar to a common telephone connector ( RJ-11 ) except it is slightly larger. The RJ-45 has 8 pins while the RJ-11 has only 4.
