NUTRITION and DENTAL HEALTH

NUTRITION and DENTAL HEALTH dental and oral health has a major impact on overall health and vice versa - the key to overall health is a healthy lifestyle and proper eating habits we as future doctors have a great responsibility - we should set an example of a healthy lifestyle our health does not excuse ignorance and lack of information

1 glass = cca 300 ml 7x glass = cca 2 litres • one serving ( porce ) = the size of your palm or fist

Food pyramid of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic REMEMBER: a balanced diet means eating 2 kg of food per day + drinking 2 liters of fluids ( preferably water , unsweetened tea ) REMEMBER: As important as what you eat is quantity

HEALTHY DIET – my diet and BMI amount and calories depends on weight , gender me : 173 cm, 62 kg (BMI = 21.1) - 1500 kcal/ day = 6300 kJ / day breakfast : 25% = cca 400 kcal = 200g white yogurt (130 kcal) + banana (120 kcal) + nuts , oatmeal (150 kcal) lunch: 30% snacks : 10% dinner : 25% it is really important to understand food labels - to shop and choose quantities according to them

And what does it look like specifically ? Menu of preschooler

MODEL MENU breakfast: white yogurt with grated apple , oatmeal (ovesné vločky), blueberries and nuts , unsweetened tea snack: kaiserka cereal , ghí, hard boiled eggs , tomato , water lunch: broccoli cream soup ( broccoli , potatoes , leek , milk ), risotto with pea pesto, parmesan , beetroot salad , water snack: chickpea (cizrna) hummus , wholegrain cumin sticks , cucumber , water with mint dinner : grilled camembert, vegetables , arugula (rukola), rye (žitný) baguette , water

CARBOHYDRATES in the context of oral health Main source of energy – 60% - strach (škrob) = pastries (pečivo) , potatoes , legumes (luštěniny) Monosaccharides : glucose , fructose , galactose = highly cariogenic sugars - fresh fruit , sweets , dried sweety fruit Disaccharides : sucrose , lactose , maltose sucrose = most commonly used sweetener – higly cariogenic sugar lactose = mammal´s milk – cheese, milk products – lowly cariogenic sugar • Polysaccharides : glycogen , starch , fiber - starch : essential component of food – potatoes , cereals , legumes

• REMEMBER: prefer complex carbohydrates to simple ones , strengthen your will , say no to sweetened products that are dangerous for your body

CARIOGENIC PROCESS disease of hard dental tissues factors : presence of bacteria , sugars , time bacteria + sugars = agressive acids  loss of minerals  tooth decay APPLY FLUORIDES to the cleaned surface of the teeth  remineralization REMEMBER, REALIZE: Tooth decay comes with a high content of sugars in the diet - because today sugar is added to most foods , it is necessary to be careful .

THE IMPORTANCE of SALIVA The more saliva is excreted – the more the acids are diluter (kyseliny jsou ředěny) Quite massive secretion = 1 liter of saliva / day SODIUM BICARBOATE ( NaHCO 3 ) – neutralizes the acids that are made up by bacteria Saliva contain calcium and phosphates  remineralization Higher salivary stimulants : cheese, chewing gum, celery, vegetables in general Dairy products (mléčné výrobky) also help neutralize acid s (made by bacteria , taken with food and drink) TIP: F inish the meal with a piece of harder vegetable or a chewing gum REMEMBER: It is smart to protect your teeth from caries by supporting your own defense mechanisms - fluorides and various products can never deal with tooth decay as your own body

TOOTH DISEASES • oral diseases are the result of unhealthy lifestyle, bad habits , mistakes of ignorance… • during life teeth surface gradually abrades = physiological situation • ATRITION = physiological abrasion due to mutual contact of teeth . - pathological atrition – painful exposure of the dentin • ABRASION = excessive grinding (nadměrné obrušování) of hard tooth tissue - the cause is biting unsuitable objects – nails , pens, pipes • WEDGE DEFECTS = KLÍNOVÉ DEFEKTY = special case of abrasion - tooth neck area, V- shaped - usually caused by bad teeth cleaning technques , hard toothbrushes , a big pressure on the toothbrush • EROSION = damage to the tooth by the chemical action of substances that are not a product of bacteria - The cause is excessive consumption (nadměrná konzumace) of sour drinks or sour fruits

HANDY TIPS in CONCLUSION Buy chewing gum and chew – removes plaque , stimulates salivation After eating a meal – take 20-minutes break before brushing your teeth Think when buying groceries (potraviny) – think calorically Be careful with amount and type of carbs Brush your teeth precisely , but gently

Thanks for your attention – I wish you strong health ! 🥰
