INTRODUCTION Poetry in the Philippines is not different from its other counterparts around the world. In the early 1900, Filipino Poetry celebrated romanticism, and several poems about love flourished.

INTRODUCTION As time passed, poetry became more formalist, the emphasis is now more on form and language rather than the theme. The modern poetry sprouted, and nowadays, writers are more adventurous in their craft.

ELEMENTS OF POETRY Senses and Images Diction Rhyme Scheme

SENSES AND IMAGES Used by writers to describe their impressions of their topic and object of writing. Writers uses carefully chosen and phrased words to create an imagery that the reader can see through his or her senses.

SENSES AND IMAGES Visual Imagery – what the writers want you to see. Olfactory Imagery – what the writer wants you to smell. Gustatory Imagery – what the writer wants you to taste.

SENSES AND IMAGES Tactile Imagery – what the writers wants you to feel. Auditory Imagery – what the writer wants you to hear.

DICTION The denotative and connotative meaning of the words in a sentence, phrase, paragraph or poem. Denotation is when you mean what you say, literally. Connotation is created when you mean something else, something that might be initially hidden.

DICTION RED ROSE Denotation – a red flower with green leaf and thorny stem Connotation – may symbolize love or passion.

DICTION BLOOD Denotation – Thick red liquid from a living organism. Connotation – may refer to life or death.

DICTION WINE Denotation – Fermented grape juice. Connotation – blood of Jesus Christ.

RHYME AND SCHEME The way author arranges words, meters, lines, and stanzas to create a coherent sound when the poem is read out loud. It may be formal or informal on the way the poem was written.

CARLOS ANGELES Born on May 25 th , 1921, in Tacloban City, Leyte. He finished his undergraduate degree at the University of the Philippines. His poetry collection, STUN OF JEWELS, won the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in Literature back in 1964.

CARLOS ANGELES He also won the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards in Poetry in 1964. His poem, “GABU” is said to be one of the most well-loved Filipino Poems Written in English.

MARJORIE EVASCO She was born in Bohol on September 21 st 1953. She writes bilingually in English and Cebuano-Visayan. She is considered as one of the country’s earliest feminist. Received numerous awards for her poetry.

MARJORIE EVASCO In 2010, she received the prestigious South East Asian Write Award (SEA Award). She is currently a professor emeritus of De la Salle University – Manila. Known for her work, “IS IT THE KINGFISHER?”

CIRILO BAUTISTA Born on 1941. A well-known poet, fictionist, critic, and nonfiction writer. Received an honorary degree in writing and was the only Filipino to be honored with that award in University of Iowa.

CIRILO BAUTISTA He is also a current professor emeritus in De La Salle University – Manila. Recently awarded as a NATIONAL ARTIST FOR LITERATURE by the university of the Philippines. Known for his work “ON HOW TO FIND SILENCE IN THE WORLD”
